Paul Kiernan TrumpetA new work by Irish composer Linda Buckley will be premiered at Up Close with Music presented by Concorde at the RHA Gallery on Sunday 29 March.  Performances feature new Irish music in an international context and take place from 2.30 – 4.30 pm.  Music from Ireland, USA, Iceland, Hong Kong and the UK will be performed by Concorde.

The programme features:

  • A new work for bass clarinet, violin, cello and electronics commissioned from Irish composer Linda Buckley.  The new work is performed twice during the afternoon, giving listeners a chance to reflect and listen in different ways.

  • The Irish premiere of Dave Fennessy’s duo for violin and cello – Changeless and the changed (St. Kilda Dandelion), written in 2014 for the Transplanted Project and taking its inspiration from the delicate and complex seed head of the humble Dandelion.
  • The world premiere of  Jerome de Bromhead’s violin piece – Charlie’s Lonesome Violin Blues – in tribute to the composer’s 70th birthday year.
  • The Irish premiere of renowned British composer Jonathan Harvey’s Fanfare for clarinet and trumpet, composed in the year of his death, 2012.
  • The world premiere of ‘Guts ‘n’ Bellows’ for violin and accordion by the award winning Greek-American composer Nickitas Demos.
  • The European premiere of Kokû (Vacuity) by Hong Kong composer Yip Kim Fung.  The title is related to Buddhism and the music evokes a sense of meditation.

Performers in the February concert are Paul Roe, clarinets; Elaine Clark, violin; Martin Johnson, cello; Dermot Dunne, accordion; and Paul Kiernan, trumpet – Concorde’s student performer for the 2015 series.
