Winners of the 2012 West Cork Chamber Music Festival Composition Competition announced

West Cork Music, in partnership with the Contemporary Music Centre and the Irish Music Rights Organisation, would like to announce the winners of the 2012 West Cork Chamber Music Festival Composition Competition.

The winners of the West Cork Chamber Music Festival’s fifth Composition Competition are Solfa Carlile with her piano trio titled Saul and the Witch, J. Harry Whalley with his string quartet Compression and Bill McGrath with his string quartet Prelude and Fugue. These works will be discussed in a workshop with the Festival’s composer-in-residence, Thomas Larcher, on Saturday 30 June at 14.00.

These young composers’ works will be premiered during the Festival which takes place in Bantry from 29 June to 7 July. They will take place as follows:

Sunday 1 July 14.00 J.Harry Whalley – Compression played by Gildas Quartet

Thursday 5 July 14.00 Solfa Carlile – Saul and the Witch played by Westland Trio

Friday 6 July 14.00 Bill McGrath – Prelude and Fugue played by Benz Quartet

Nineteen works were submitted for the three prizes. The adjudicator commented, “the scores for this year’s West Cork Chamber Music Composition Competition were of a high standard with a strong level of experimentation and imagination throughout. I am delighted by the response and would like to commend all those who submitted new work.”
