IMRO is a national organisation that administers the performing right in copyright music in Ireland on behalf of its members - songwriters, composers and music publishers - and on behalf of the members of the international overseas societies that are affiliated to it. IMRO’s function is to collect and distribute royalties arising from the public performance of copyright works. IMRO is a not-for-profit organisation.

Under the 2000 Copyright and Related Rights Act it is necessary to obtain a licence from IMRO to cover any performance of copyrighted material.

A licence is required for the public performance of copyright music in any public place, regardless of the kind of premises at which the performance takes place.

Copyright law defines a public place as any place outside the domestic circle.

Music users such as broadcasters, venues and businesses must pay for their use of copyright music by way of a blanket licence fee. IMRO collects these monies and distributes them to the copyright owners involved. The monies earned by copyright owners in this way are known as public performance royalties.

In addition to it being a legal requirement to take out an IMRO licence if you are using music in public situations, it also makes good business sense to have an IMRO licence. By taking out an IMRO licence you are obtaining a blanket licence to use millions of musical works to improve that way in which your business operates. You are also fulfilling your legal and moral obligations with regard to using songwriters, composers and music publishers property.
