IMRO Events at Temple Bar TradFest 2014

Violin (1)This January, the venues and streets of Temple Bar will once again play host to one of the biggest traditional music and culture festivals in Ireland – Temple Bar TradFest. Since its inception in 2005, Temple Bar TradFest has grown in size, recognition and quality and is now a firm fixture on the national and international festival calendar attracting visitors from around the world.

Each year, the IMRO Showcases at Temple Bar TradFest aim to shine a light on the rising stars of traditional music in Ireland. In additon to the showcases, two legends of Irish music, Frankie Gavin and Johnny Duhan will deliver master classes in the intimate setting of the New Theatre. Book now to avoid dissappointment!

IMRO Music Master Class with Frankie Gavin

Frankie Gavin is regarded as the Prince of fiddle players and of recent times, made the Guinness Book of World Records as the Fastest Fiddle player in the World. Frankie is the founder of De Dannan and has collaborated with such luminaries as Stephane Grappelli, Sir Yehudi Menuhin, and The Rolling Stones.

IMRO Song Writing Master Class with Johnny Duhan
Saturday 25th January 14:00-16:00
Known for his fierce independence and integrity as an artist, Johnny has condensed a body of work spanning 40 years into a quartet of epic albums. Johnny’s songs are sung all over the world in a variety of languages, thanks to the focus put on them by artists such as Christy Moore, The Dubliners and Mary Black.

The Golden Era of Ceili Music and Dance 1955 – 1970 – Presented by Brian Lawler

During the period 1999 to 2004, in conjunction with the Irish Traditional Music Archive (ITMA), Brian Lawler recorded interviews with 70 people including céilí band founders and members, promoters, dancers and radio personnel. He obtained a total of 42 hours of recorded material. All of the edited recordings are available to the public at the ITMA. As founder member of the Ardellis Ceili Band, Brian was actively involved himself on the road with the Ardellis throughout the period. He has put together an insightful talk on the project which consists of a review of the work and includes short extracts from some of the field interviews along with samples of the music of the period.

Since his first review of the project in Boston College USA in September 2005, Brian has given many presentations in libraries and art venues throughout Ireland. Brian brings the presentation to the New Theatre as part of Temple Bar TradFest 2014.

IMRO Showcases at Temple Bar TradFest Kick Off Tonight

This evening, the first of two IMRO Showcases at Temple Bar TradFest will take place in the New Theatre, Temple Bar. Traditional groups, Tremolo and Réalta, will be kicking things off. The New Theatre is the venue for the second showcase, taking place tomorrow evening, followed by two masterclasses on Saturday afternoon.

Tremolo consists of four accomplished musicians from the Irish traditional music scene, brought together by their shared taste in melodic, transparent music. Whilst remaining at all times innovative and refreshing, their technical ability never stands in the way of them remaining true to their collective musical passion.

Donall Donnelly is a talismanic fiddle-player who adds a dynamism and drive to the unique sound of Tremulo. Since becoming ‘Fiddler of Dooney’ champion he has gone on to tour worldwide, supporting bands like Capercaille, the Michael McGoldrck band and playing festivals ranging from Womad to Celtic Connections in Glasgow. Guitarist, Donncha Moynihan, infuses subtlety and warmth into everything he plays. Donncha is Cork-based and was a founding member of the much lauded traditional group Calico in early 1998 who went on to release two award-winning albums- “Celanova Square” and “Songdogs”.

Stijn Van Beek (uileann pipes/low whistle) performs in an eclectic range of bands. He has featured as a soloist on an album with tango bandoneonist Carel Kraayenhof playing compositions by Ennio Morricone and has played at major Dutch pop festivals with rock group ‘Moke’.  Making up the four-piece, Karl Nesbitt (bouzouki, flute and bodhran) has performed with some of the best musicians in Irish music in various majestic settings across Europe, the UK and China. He has carved out a reputation for himself as a band arranger and for two years in succession in Brittany, he organised and orchestrated the music for a band representing Ireland at the Festival Interceltique in L‟orient.

Belfast based band Réalta have launched onto the Irish music scene with their lively, exciting and unique approach to Irish traditional music. Performing on dual uilleann pipes, whistles, guitar, bouzouki, vocals and bodhrán, this multi instrumentalist group make full use of the intricate melodies and driving rhythms that make Irish music so loved throughout the world.

Having toured Germany alongside Altan in 2011 and won the prestigious Danny Kyle Award at Celtic Connections 2012, these young musicians have earned a reputation for delighting audiences as they present an enchanting programme of dance music interspersed with the occasional story, air and song.

New Festival to Showcase the Work of Irish and European Composers

New Music DublinNew Music Dublin is a major new festival that gives voice to a broad range of musical creativity from our time by showcasing the work of major international and Irish figures to the public, and through the involvement of many Irish artists.

NMD is a new partnership initiative of The Arts Council, The National Concert Hall, RTÉ Orchestras and the Contemporary Music Centre. It will take place in the NCH on March 1st, 2nd and 3rd 2013 and is the first event arising from a planned five-year partnership. The Arts Council is providing significant funding to New Music Dublin (see below for further background information regarding each of the partner organisations).

NMD offers audiences the opportunity to immerse themselves in many different types of new music. The 2013 Festival includes the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra, directed by virtuoso trombonist Christian Lindberg in the world premiere of Lindberg’s new work ‘Kundraan and the Arctic Light’; the RTÉ Concert Orchestra performing the Irish premieres of Arvo Pärt’s ‘Symphony Number 4’ and Louis Andriessen’s ‘De Staat’; Garth Knox bringing his ECM project ‘Saltarello’ to Dublin; the serene voices of the Hilliard Ensemble paired with the haunting music of Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannson; Crash Ensemble with European voices new to Ireland including Heiner Goebbels and Michel van der Aa; Callino Quartet with a world premiere by Kevin Volans; late night events including the cosmopolitan duo A Winged Victory For The Sullen and more.

In addition to the programme of concerts taking place over the festival weekend, NMD has a busy schedule of workshops, masterclasses and other events. The festival forms part of Ireland’s EU Presidency Cultural Programme, and at a time when our relationship with Europe is undergoing much discussion, is an opportunity to celebrate the diverse creative nature of the current generation of European and Irish artists.
