Jape, Australian Release and Tour Announced

Having won the prestigious Choice Music Prize for ‘Album Of The Year’ (Ireland’s equivalent of Britain’s Mercury Prize), Jape release their acclaimed album, ‘Ocean Of Frequency’ in Australia on 28th September.

The universally praised record marks the first international release on HUB The Label (Dappled Cities, Winter People) and is the finest collection of twisted pop songs you’re likely to encounter this side of the 80s.

The release comes ahead of Jape’s soon-to-be-announced debut Australian tour with Dappled Cities Hailing from Dublin, Ireland, and now calling Sweden home; Jape began as the solo moniker of Richie Egan – who was at the time performing in various projects including Redneck Manifesto and Domino Records’ Villagers – and has evolved over the past five years into one of the most exciting live acts in Europe, developing a cult-like status.

The band broke into global consciousness in 2007 when The Raconteurs’ Brendan Benson encountered Jape’s track “Floating” while on a trip to Ireland. Benson loved it so much he would soon begin incorporating a cover of it into live sets. Jape found themselves supporting the Jack White-fronted supergroup on stages around the world, and having their track reinterpreted by the likes of Soulwax.

Egan has been part of many bands from an early age, and spent his youth experimenting with four-track tape recorders and sounds. This experimentation provides the foundation of ‘Ocean Of Frequency’, which knits together an eclectic blend of meticulously crafted lyrics and electronic rhythms; with influences ranging from Brian Eno to Caribou. “….blending guitars and synthetic beats to great effect. He’s probably bored of being called the Irish Beck, so we won’t. Instead, let’s just say no-one has done this type of thing as well since… well, you get the picture” ★★★★ NME

Jape’s regard within Ireland has reached levels unprecedented by musical peers, becoming the first act ever to win the regarded Choice Music Prize for Best Irish Album twice: first for 2008’s ‘Ritual’ and this year for ‘Ocean Of Frequency’. The award has long been regarded as a launching pad for Ireland’s finest, with previous winners including Two Door Cinema Club and The Divine Comedy. Lauded by European critics, the album is a boundless, genre-defying exploration of sound, ideas and possibilities. “The idea for the title, Ocean of Frequency came from an interview I saw with Michael Talbot,” says Egan. “He was an American author who wrote some books linking science with mysticism. I feel the answer to religion lies somewhere in science and I like to think that we all float about in an ocean of frequency that we can’t understand. People always go on about the difference between science and religion, in my opinion there is an unending spiritual beauty in the order of science.”

World Premiere Of New Work By Brendan Graham At Australian Famine Memorial

Brendan Graham, internationally acclaimed Irish songwriter and novelist, will deliver this year’s address at the Australian Memorial to the Great Irish Famine, at Hyde Park Barracks in Sydney, on Sunday August 26, 2012. The event is presented by the Great Irish Famine Commemoration Committee.

Graham will present ‘From Famine to Freedom—Ireland to Australia’, a commemoration in word and song of those who suffered during An Gorta Mór (The Great Irish Famine) and of those who fled the Famine to establish a new life in Australia. He has written a new song, Orphan Girl, which will have its premiere performance on the day. The song is dedicated to the memory of the 4,112, mainly teenage Irish orphan girls, who were given a free passage to Australia from workhouses in every county of Ireland between 1848 and 1850.

Four hundred names of these Irish workhouse girls are engraved in the glass panels, fading away as you read them from left to right, representing fading memories. This selection of names represents all who are forced to flee famine and economic hardship.

Sarah Calderwood will join Brendan Graham at the Memorial on 26 August. She is a singer and storyteller who combines classic and contemporary folk. The charismatic front woman of Queensland’s premier Celtic group, Sunas, Sarah has been performing for over a decade, touring nationally and internationally to critical acclaim.

Graham and Calderwood will be joined by the inspirational Australian Girls Choir which has previously performed for Nelson Mandela, Oprah Winfrey, Queen Elizabeth II and President Obama. The choir captured the hearts of the nation with their rendition of ‘I Still Call Australia Home’ for Qantas. They performed Graham’s ‘You Raise Me Up’ at the 2012 Australian Women’s Tennis Open telecast to millions worldwide and will again perform it on this 13th anniversary of the unveiling of the Famine Monument in Sydney.

Ireland has always supported this project, from 2 September 1998 when her Excellency Mary McAleese, President of Ireland initiated work on the Australian Monument to the Great Irish Famine by removing the first stone from the wall which was subsequently realigned and incorporated into the Monument.

For more details of the Monument and this workhouse immigration scheme see: www.irishfaminememorial.org

Christie Hennessy Song Competition 2012 | Open For Entries

Christie was born in Tralee, County Kerry; he was the youngest of 9 children. There was always music in the house. His father played jazz on the accordian, his mother, a great storyteller, sang traditional Irish songs. Neighbours and family members, including Henry Curtin who played drums (Frank Sinatra’s drummer), would join in the regular sessions of music and song. (Happy Days)

From these early memories, Christie’s influences ranged from Elvis, Al Jolson, Bill Haley, Fats Domino, Robert Johnson and Mississippi John Hurt to The Beatles and all musicals.

Christie left school at 11½ (the ½ he said was important). At 15 he went to work on building sites in London by day and played in the R&B clubs by night. Christie was 23 when he wrote his first song.

Christie released his first album “Christie Hennessy” (also known as “The Green Album”) in 1972, “The Rehearsal” 1992 (triple platinum), “A Year In The Life” 1993 (quadruple platinum), “Lord of Your Eyes” 1994 (triple platinum), “The Box” 1996 (triple platinum), “This Is As Far As I Go” 1999 (double platinum), “The Definitive Christie Hennessy” 2003, “Stories For Sale” 2005, “The Platinum Collection” 2007.

Christie was discovered by the late John Peel.

Christie composed the theme tune and incidental music for the BBC TV series “Get Well Soon” written by Ray Galton (“Steptoe & Son”) and composed and wrote a musical/feature film about his native Ireland “Two Stops to Paradise”.

As well as writing Christie produced two of his own albums with Steve Nye, “The Box” and “This Is As Far As I Go”. He solo produced Aled Jones’ album “Whenever God Shines His Light”.

The following artists are among the many who have covered Christie’s songs.

Christy Moore – “Don’t Forget Your Shovel”
Frances Black – “All The Lies That You Told Me”
Moya Brennan – “Oh Jealous Heart”
Nizlopi attained their first No.1 (“JCB Song”) sampling some of Christie’s lyrics from “Don’t Forget Your Shovel” (Xmas single 2005 – UK & Ireland)

Christie was the Patron to the Irish charity “Children in Crossfire”. His special focus was on the schools literacy programmes, as Christie was unable to read or write himself due to his childhoold years spent roaming the countryside rather than attending school. He suffered from severe dyslexia which was not picked up at school.

Following a trip to Kenya with the charity in 2006 and after spending time in the different villages with the children, Christie wrote a song “A Price For Love”. He thought it was very important that the lyrics came from what the children would say to us all if they could. All royalties from this single are being donated to the charity in perpetuity. You can find out more about “Children in Crossfire” on their website.

Jogging ‘Take Courage’ Album Launch

Out on a Limb presents

JOGGING

‘TAKE COURAGE’ – ALBUM LAUNCH with special guests GUILTY OPTICS & ELK

 Whelan’s, 25 Wexford St, D2.

Saturday 25th August Doors 8pm Tickets €10/€15 with LP & Digital Download

‘Take Courage’ will be Released on Friday, August 24th on Out On A Limb Records

Take Courage is Jogging’s follow-up to the much-acclaimed Minutes (2010, Richter Collective), taking a leap in fidelity having been recorded in June 2012 with U.S. producer Chris Common (ex-These Arms Are Snakes, with production credits for Minus The Bear, Pelican, Mastodon, and Tiny Vipers under his belt). It will be Jogging’s first release for Out On A Limb Records, coming out on vinyl (with download) and digital on Friday, August 24th.

Jogging awakened in 2009 and quickly gained a formidable live reputation. They have toured Ireland and the UK, sharing the stage with Wire, Polvo, Ponytail, And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead and Themselves amongst others. Jogging’s music has been described as “an intense, raw blend of post-hardcore and gutsy indie rock”.

Take Courage sees Jogging dealing with constantly rearranging social structures, the aging process, and the effects of living out an extended teenhood throughout one’s twenties, all served up with a hefty dollop of malice and spite (albeit mostly directed towards same selves). The composition and collaboration is a marked progression on Minutes, where no part overstays its welcome and every transition is seamless yet startling. Sonically, it is worlds apart from the first record, as drums thunder their way through each turn, the well-rounded yet distorted bass rumbles and drives the melodies and the guitars cut though like ice-picks. The band’s trademark call-and-response vocals are barked with authority and conviction down to their last breath, and every word has resonance. A rare thing for an Irish record in 2012.

The album will be officially launched at Whelan’s, Dublin, on Saturday, August 25th, with special guests Elk and Guilty Optics. The launch will be followed by dates around Ireland in September.

Contemporary Music Centre Announces Summer Series At Exchange Dublin

The Contemporary Music Centre will present a series of short early evening concerts of music by Irish composers over four Thursdays in August.

The performances, each lasting around 30 minutes, feature soloists from several of the country’s leading ensembles and will take place at Exchange Dublin in Temple Bar. Admission is free.

On 9 August Andreja Malir, Principal Harpist with the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra, opens the series with a recital including works by Brian Boydell and Philip Martin. The accordion is the focus on 16 August when Dermot Dunne, a member of the contemporary music ensemble Concorde, performs works by James Wilson and Deirdre Gribbin. Soprano and Béal Festival co-founder Elizabeth Hilliard’s concert on 23 August features music by Gráinne Mulvey, David Bremner and Derek Ball. Finally, on 30 August, Lisa Dowdall, viola player with Crash Ensemble, performs works by Amanda Feery, Ann Cleare, Linda Buckley and David Collier. Each performer will introduce the music, providing an insight into each work.

The series showcases the work of the Contemporary Music Centre, which acts as an archive and resource centre for Irish composition. This is the first time that CMC has presented events at Exchange Dublin, a collective arts centre presenting a wide range of visual arts, music, drama and discussion. The informal performances will be entirely visible from the street and it is hoped they will attract an audience which might not have encountered Irish new music previously.
