The Irish Canon is an ongoing project that sees some of Ireland’s top performers bringing specially selected programmes of Irish works to universities and venues across the country. With this series, the Association of Irish Composers seeks to create a new canon of Irish works, by ensuring multiple performances of music by Irish composers, and taking the first steps toward making them repertoire standards. Each programme is chosen by the performer as the best representation of the current Irish repertoire for their instruments.
Performers in the series include Paul Roe (clarinets), David Bremner (organ), Cora Venus Lunny (violin), Kate Ellis (cello), William Dowdall (flutes), Isabelle O’Connell (piano), Michelle O’Rourke (voice) and a duo of David Bremner and Elizabeth Hilliard (piano and voice).
The series’ first season began with a lecture-recital on works for bass clarinet by Paul Roe at TCD’s Music Composition Centre, and continues with dates across the country up to April 2014, with a second season to be announced in the coming months.
The series is to be officially launched at the Contemporary Music Centre on 20 November 2013, featuring short performances by Paul Roe (clarinet) and Elizabeth Hilliard (voice).
The launch will be followed by David Bremner’s recital at Christ Church, where he will perform a programme of Irish music for organ, including music by: Gráinne Mulvey, John McLachlan, Kevin O’Connell, Anna Murray, Donnacha Dennehy, Ryan Molloy, Ben McHugh, Benedict Schlepper-Connolly, Jonathan Nangle, Derek Ball and Bremner himself.
