The Gloaming Awarded For Their Second Album ‘2’

(L-R) Caoimhín Ó’Raghallaigh, Keith Johnson (IMRO) and Iarla Ó’Lionáird

Having reached the top spot in the Irish Album and Independent charts in March of this year The Gloaming took some time out of their busy schedules to accept their IMRO No.1 Awards. ‘2’ is the second album from The Gloaming and follows from their self titled and No.1 debut ‘The Gloaming’.

The Gloaming dwells at a musical crossroads, enhancing traditional Irish music’s rich, melancholic tones with modern hues of jazz, contemporary classical, and experimental music. Steeped in traditional Irish music since birth, fiddlers Martin Hayes and Caoimhin Ó Raghallaigh and sean-nós singer Iarla Ó Lionáird are joined by New York pianist Thomas Bartlett (Doveman), and Chicago-born guitarist Dennis Cahill.

The new album “2” was recorded in December of 2105 at Real World Studios and released in late February of 2016.  As with the groups’ debut, it was produced by Thomas Bartlett and engineered and mixed by Patrick Dillett.

You can follow The Gloaming on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or their website.

Cado To Release His New EP ‘Take Me Back’ on August 12th

Be transported back to the 50s & 60’s with Cado’s brand new EP Vintage inspired rock and roll artist Cado, brings us a refreshingly nostalgic EP ‘Take Me Back’ set for release 12th August.

Having been born half a century too late in 1990, Cado is a modern rock and roll artist with an obsession for music of the past! After stealing a Beatles album from a record shop aged 10, he was inspired to make music that will make people smile, dance and enjoy themselves!

Listen to/download the EP here: https://cadomusic.bandcamp.com/

Cado, who grew up in County Kildare, Ireland, was mesmerised at an early age by the sound of The Beatles and Chuck Berry and from then commenced a lifelong obsession with music! His father would perform Johnny B. Goode to him, and when he heard the hard hitting opening riff featured in back to the future at age 11, he did not hesitate to pick up a guitar and has rarely put it down since!

The multi instrumentalist has toured the UK and Ireland with The Shades and in early 2016 he began recording a collection of songs inspired by the music he adores. The singer-songwriter takes a completely DIY approach, self recording and mixing everything in his home studio. Every instrument on the EP was performed by him allowing him make music that he truly loves. The retro sounding EP has strong nods towards classic artists such as Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis. The EP is out on 12th August.

You can follow Cado on Facebook, Bandcamp, Spotify and SoundCloud

ASCAP & BMI Join Forces to Fight the Department of Justice’s Interpretation of their Consent Decrees

ASCAP and BMI, the USA’s two leading performing rights organisations (PROs) collectively representing more than one million songwriters, composers and music publishers, have joined forces to fight the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) recent interpretation of their respective consent decrees and to push for consent decree reform.  United in their belief that the DOJ’s decision to mandate 100% licensing will cause unnecessary chaos in the marketplace and place unfair financial burdens and creative constraints on songwriters and composers, the two organisations are pursuing a joint campaign: BMI through litigation and ASCAP through legislative reform.

BMI today announced it is taking legal action and has initiated the process to challenge 100% licensing in Federal Court. Concurrently, ASCAP announced that it will take the lead for the two PROs in pursuing a legislative solution to ensure the continued availability of fractional licensing as well as other remedies to the outdated consent decree regulations that disadvantage songwriters and composers in the digital age. In its recent public statement, the DOJ itself called for potential legislative relief.

Mike O’Neill, President and CEO of BMI, said, “The DOJ’s interpretation of our consent decree serves no one, not the marketplace, the music publishers, the music users, and most importantly, not our songwriters and composers who now have the government weighing in on their creative and financial decisions.  Unlike the DOJ, we believe that our consent decree permits fractional licensing, a practice that encourages competition in our industry and fosters creativity and collaboration among music creators, a factor the DOJ completely dismissed.  As a result, we have no recourse other than to fight the DOJ’s interpretation in court.  It won’t be easy, and we know it will take time, but we believe that it is the right thing to do and in the best interest of the industry at large.”

Elizabeth Matthews, ASCAP CEO, stated: “The DOJ decision puts the U.S. completely out of step with the entire global music marketplace, denies American music creators their rights, and potentially disrupts the flow of music without any benefit to the public. That is why ASCAP will work with our allies in Congress, BMI and leaders within the music industry to explore legislative solutions to challenge the DOJ’s 100% licensing decision and enact the modifications that will protect songwriters, composers and the music we all love.”

In a pre-motion letter to Federal Judge Louis Stanton, BMI advised him of a proposed motion to interpret and potentially modify its consent decree.  Specifically, the letter requests the following relief:

  • Determination that BMI’s consent decree allows for the long-standing industry practice of fractional licensing, or,
  • Alternatively, an order by the court modifying the decree to allow for fractional licensing;
  • A reasonable transition period after a final ruling, if compliance with the DOJ’s interpretation is required.

The Grunts – Cult Before Country

The Grunts release their long-awaited second LP ‘Cult Before Country’ on Inner Chapter Records; ten tracks of rich and colourful alternative rock weaving in strains of indie, psych and punk.

The title of the record refers to the alluring charm of dangerous ideas, and this is borne out by the oddball characters and stories that are woven into songs like ‘Frigid Air’, ‘NYC Woman’ and ‘The Guy That Stalked You Has Become The President’.

Formed over 8 years ago and taking their influences from early U2, Echo & the Bunnymen, The Cure and the Pixies, The Grunts have steadily become one of Ireland’s most respected indie rock bands. They spent the majority of 2015-16 writing and recording ‘Cult Before Country’ in between regular touring in Ireland and a return visit to New York’s Bowery Electric. On this album the Grunts are joined by Kevin J. Power (who also recorded and mixed) on bass, backing vocals and keyboard.

Maur Byrne Releases His New Single ‘Green Blue And Grey’

Maur Byrne’s latest release “Green Blue and Grey” is now available. It’s an emotional fast paced song about how some people are dying to get back to Ireland instead of leaving it. Maybe they have emigrated and long to be home or maybe they have been here on vacation and fell in love with the wild ruggedness and quasi-anarchy, when compared to their structured lives back home.

“Green Blue and Grey” came about after talking to Swiss singer songwriter “Tamara” about how she loves Ireland and would love to move here but her life back home took priority. It was at that point I said Switzerland is nice and white but it doesn’t have the soothing Green Blue and Grey of Ireland. She agreed!

“Green Blue and Grey” is available to download from Bandcamp right now.

Green Blue and Grey is Maur’s 12th release and will appear on his next collection “Sheltered Coves” which will be available later this year
