“For the Broken Hearted” | New Single By Mickey Joe Harte out October 5

Mickey Joe (MJ) was embraced by the hearts of the nation, during the popular television show, You’re A Star, and subsequently representing Ireland with his song We’ve Got The World in 2003’s Eurovision. In the years that followed he would justifiably become a key figure on the Irish music scene. We’ve Got The World went on to sell in excess of six times platinum status.

Having signed to Sony Music UK following the We’ve Got The World success, Mickey Joe released the No 1 album, ‘Sometimes Right, Sometimes Wrong’ album with the label.  Since then, alongside his manager, Mickey Joe set up his own label Swerve Music.  His discography is as impressive as one would expect from someone on the scene for more than 15 years.  During this time, he has enjoyed No. 1 chart hits, numerous Top 20 successes, and thousands of live shows. His writing collaborations include working with Paul Brady, Kieran Goss and Jack Tempchin (The Eagles).  Indeed, a co-write with Kieran Goss, Like Lovers Do was recorded by the stunning Rodney Crowel.  Mickey Joe also writes with and for stunning country music star, Lisa McHugh.  One of these tracks Bring On The Sunshine features on Lisa’s No 1 album from 2015, Wildfire.

Mickey Joe is currently recording new material in Germany with producer Dieter KirchenbauerFor The Broken Hearted is the first single to be released from these sessions.  The single sees Mickey Joe leaning a little further toward the Americana Roots genre. This weekend Mickey Joe issued the video For The Broken Hearted.  The video is a stunning piece of work and encapsulates the song’s energy perfectly.  The video was shot last month in Mevagh Parish and Logues, Carrigart in MJ’s home county of Donegal.

A further single is planned for spring 2018, followed by a new EP.  In addition to recording with Dieter, the Donegal native has been spending time otherwise in Germany also, including a period as a featured vocalist on the RTL Television hit dance series ‘Lets Dance’ in 2016, and also live shows.  He returns to Germany this autumn for a number of live shows.  Having already played at Musik Meile Festival on September 1st and 2nd last, MJ returns in October for further live shows.

Having gigged solo and with a backing band here at home, MJ has played host and performer on the Writers Series, an in the round concept with two very special guest artists featured at each event.  Up to this point many of his industry friends, including John Spillane, Nick Kelly, Duke Special and Eleanor McEvoy have featured. Mickey Joe loves to perform live, and we are looking forward to some Irish shows by him from spring of 2018.  www.mickeyjoeharte.com

Carrie Haskins Releases ‘Last Rites’

Carrie Haskins is a young singer, songwriter and musician from Kildare who describes her musical style as ‘country crossover’.

Carrie Haskins has ‘listened to and been inspired by country music’ since she was a child. While her style is rooted in an ‘honest blend’ of American Country and Pop, her palette of influences range from Brad Paisley to Tammy Wynette.

Carrie ‘emits a beautiful and emotionally real sound that wins over many listeners’.

In 2011, Carrie received major accolades and recognition appearing on and reaching the battle stages of “The Voice”, Ireland. Her chair-turning “Blind Audition” with the show can be viewed here: http://youtu.be/iUgkyKv4e00

Carrie has studied music for a total of six years. Commencing her musical education at the Ballyfermot College of Further Education, her studies continued at the British and Irish Modern Music Institute (BIMM) Dublin, where she completed the song writing stream graduating in 2015 with a B.A Honours Degree in Commercial Modern Music.

Celebrating the release of her Debut EP ‘Country Spirit’ in 2014, Carrie’s records can be described as a mix of upbeat and more relaxed ballads. Musical gems like “The Letter Goodbye” (released as a single and video), “Country Spirit”, “Don’t Wanna Dance”, “Mine” and “Revenge” make for a captivating and rapturing listen. Her arrangement of lush instrumentation intertwined with rich vocal lines and harmonies from her opening track ‘Country Spirit’ right through to the closing track ‘Revenge’ transport you (the listener) through  a journey of emotional highs and lows, lyrically, melodically and instrumentally.

‘Country Spirit’ was distributed globally through INgrooves/Universal Music Group (a leader in the independent music distribution and marketing industry) to over 100 countries.
Ms. Haskins is also recognized as a CMT Artist, receiving this branding through star ones entertainment’s licensing deal with Viacom. This has resulted in her attaining her own site on Viacom.TV, featuring the video “The Letter Goodbye”. You can experience her poignant and emotionally-charged video on her Viacom site on the Links below.

In 2012, Carrie donated her song, “Mine’’ to the Jack & Jill Children’s Foundation as the backing track for Jonathan Irwin’s story about his son Jack .  This video reached over one million people during the first week after its release. It helped raise €20,000 which Jonathon Irwin said he was ‘both stunned and grateful for all the shares, likes and donations’ generated by this 3 minute video which was made in 2012 and re-released.  Jonathon tells his son Jack’s story using prompt cards against the soundtrack of Carrie’s song ‘Mine’. The song was used again this year for the 2nd time. This great story can be viewed here: https://www.facebook.com/396618803872929/videos/494162950785180/

Carrie chose ‘Mine’ as she thought the message in the song ‘suited the cause and represented the work and help that the Jack and Jill Children’s Foundation give to so many families’. According to Carrie, it’s about how ‘one special person in your life is always there for you no matter what… you can be truly be yourself around this person and they love you endlessly, flaws and all’. She wrote ‘Mine’ while in Germany in the Pop Academy in Hammelburg in 2009 with the Ballyfermot College of Music. The inspiration for the song came from being ‘away from home and missing the people in [her] life that meant most to [her]’. Writing it made Carrie ‘feel happy and content, knowing that there is always someone who will support you’.

Carrie was interviewed on KFM and gave a fantastic live rendition of the song on 17th May 2016, kindly donating her time, voice and talent free to Jack and Jill to accompany this story video in 2012 when she and her classmates at BIMM Dublin got a call out to submit songs for the Jack and Jill video which was a backdrop to the DIT Fashion Show in Vicar Street.

In November 16’, Carrie and her writing partner travelled to Nashville where they spent a period of two weeks showcasing, co-writing and performing in a number of popular venues throughout the music city. In Nashville, she worked with two – time Grammy nominate songwriter ‘Jan Buckingham’ and recording artist ‘Shelby Lee Lowe’. Following this inspirational trip, Carrie returned home and began working on her album where she recorded a compilation of songs that were written in Nashville with various Artists.

The completed 10 track album titled ‘Last Rites’, is due to be released this week on the 27th of September’17 with a debut music video that was filmed in the historic ‘Wicklow Gaol’. Carrie chose the Gaol as perfect location to shoot the video for ‘Last Rites’, which tells the story of a prisoner who must face his demons as he awaits the death penalty for his crimes and sins he has committed in his life.

Carrie describes the Gaol as being “a wonderful atmospheric experience which offers visitors a glimpse of life in prisons of the past’. She continues to describe the idea behind the video and why this museum helped her capture the images needed to make a real life powerful and effective video. “I wanted the venue that I chose to capture a real life situation, where there were real jail cells, and bars, a venue that I didn’t have to modify in order to give the viewer the realisation and sense that this prisoner is actually going to be given the death plenty.’’

The lyrics in this song are very dark and it emphasises and touches upon the pain and anxiety that the prisoner feels, knowing that each day he wakes could be his last as he awaits his faith that is the ‘death penalty’.

“It’s a dark place in that prison cell, no windows, no way to tell but its coming, its coming, its hell, its hell’.

The album can be streamed or purchased on all major streaming sites such as iTunes, Spotify, Amazon and Bandcamp and the video can be viewed on the sites below.

Sean Rooney Releases ‘Everest High’

‘Everest High’ is the debut single from Longford musician Sean Rooney.

This poignant track speaks openly about mental health problems.  ‘Everest High’ is written about the struggle that comes from suffering with depression from the point of view of both the sufferer and also from the point of view of someone who doesn’t understand what it’s like to have it.

The video features both Sean and Irish actress Lorna Quinn from Irish film ‘Dare to be Wild’, Love/Hate and Fair City. It was filmed between Longford and Leitrim and produced by Outtake Community Media.

Sean has been playing on the Irish music scene for a year and gaining a great following. He’s played slots on stages at Electric Picnic, Bloom in the Park, YouBloom, Free Fringe Festival, The Workman’s Club and Whelan’s.

He is recording his debut EP at Real World studios in Longford and it is due for release later this year.

The single ‘Everest High’ is now available to buy on iTunes.

New Morrissey and Marshall Single Announced

Having had an overwhelming reaction to this particular track on Morrissey and Marshall’s latest album, the duo has decided that ‘I Need You’ will be their next single release.

‘I Need You’ is an emotional piano ballad which Darren Morrissey describes as “the heaviest song on the album”.

“It’s written from the perspective of a girl who’s lost her loved one, and is writing to tell him of her loneliness despite being surrounded by everyone. How she needs him more than the attention or affection from others and in fact more than she needs to be here at all.”

I struggle to hold it together every time I sing it… in fact, you can hear my voice breaking in the second verse on the record. It’s been one of my favourite songs to play on our latest European tour. It’s one of those ‘pin drop’ moments in the set.

I have had quite a lot of people write to me to say how the song has touched them and that makes me happy… that’s why we do it.

“I Need You” – from the album “We Rise” is released on October 27.

New All Tvvins Track “Anything” Out Today

When Conor Adams and Lar Kaye formed All Tvvins, their shared goal was to headline Dublin’s 1600-capacity Olympia Theatre – and that was achieved when they sold-out the venue last autumn, just weeks after their debut album ‘IIVV’ crashed into the Irish album charts at #2.

Now the duo have announced they will release their second track since ‘IIVV’ was released. Following on from “Alone Together” feat. James Vincent McMorrow, comes “Anything”, a clear step beyond anything that featured on ‘IIVV’and a development on “Alone Together”

When ‘IIVV’ was nominated for Album of the Year at the Choice Music Awards, it heralded the end of the album’s campaign. After a minimal break, the duo soon “turbo-boosted” their writing process where they amassed a group of new singles they plan on releasing over the coming months. Whereas they previously painstakingly crafted each song together, they instead found themselves creating almost completed ideas individually before allowing the other partner to put their stamp on it.

Most of the new tracks emerged on piano and synths before being fleshed out into a band dynamic. Inspired by a whole world of influences, Lar describes them as being “varied and extreme” and “emotionally charged”, while Conor notes that his interest in keys means that he has been writing a lot more on piano.

All Tvvins have previously shared stages with bands including Arcade Fire, Pixies and Foals, and have played events as diverse as the VICE House Party and the huge 2FM Xmas Ball in Dublin. They’re planning to road-test some new material across the summer festivals and announce a headline tour across Europe for early 2018.

Linda McAuley, Seamus Mac Géidigh (RIP), Billy McCarthy (RIP) and Joe King announced as the 2017 IMRO Radio Awards Hall of Fame inductees

At a ceremony held at the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI) offices in Dublin today, four new IMRO Radio Awards Hall of Fame inductees were announced. The IMRO Radio Awards celebrated the massive impact all four have had on the radio industry on the island of Ireland. Friends and family of Linda McAuley (BBC Radio Ulster), Séamus Mac Géidigh RIP (RTÉ Raidió Na Gaeltachta), Billy McCarthy RIP (WLR FM) and Joe King (Broadcast Technical Services Limited).

The IMRO Radio Awards Hall of Fame is a highly regarded accolade in the Irish industry and the four new inductees join names such as Gay Byrne, Larry Gogan, Ian Dempsey, Áine Lawlor, Candy Devine and Tony Fenton amongst others. The Hall of Fame celebrates those well-known names and those behind the mic that make Irish radio such an integral part of daily life.

Sean Murtagh, Chairperson of the IMRO Radio Awards Committee said “the Hall of Fame was established to pay enduring tribute to not just the well-known Irish radio personalities but also to those who worked quietly behind the scenes helping to make Radio in Ireland great. Today’s inductees are very worthy recipients of this accolade and held in the highest regard by their peers.”

“We are delighted to induct four of the most respected radio professionals on the island of Ireland into the IMRO Radio Awards Hall of Fame.  Each of them in their own way has made an indelible mark on the broadcasting sector and they rightfully deserve to take their place alongside the many other great Irish radio luminaries who have been honoured by their peers over the years.” Eleanor McEvoy, IMRO Chairman.

Speaking at the event, Professor Pauric Travers, Chairperson of the BAI said “since its establishment, the Hall of Fame has marked, in a meaningful and personal way, the level of esteem in which those who are honoured are held by their peers.  In their various and unique ways, each inductee reminds us why it is that Irish radio continues to engage, inform and entertain listeners, reflecting their passions, interests and concerns”.

Linda McAuley: For more than two decades, Linda McAuley has been BBC Radio Ulster’s and Northern Ireland’s de facto Consumer Champion: the friend to which thousands of listeners turn to solve their problems, big or small.  When all else fails, Linda and ‘On Your Behalf’, the programme she’s hosted continuously since its launch in 1995, will get it sorted, or their questions answered and voices heard. She is, as far as the audience is concerned, a one-woman dynamo, campaigner, wrong-righter, social service and broadcasting institution.

Linda’s radio career has spanned both commercial and BBC stations, from reporting and hard news to magazine and consumer programmes. She first joined BBC Radio Ulster in 1978 as presenter of the evening drive time programme ‘Change Gear’ and returned in 1989 to present ‘Morning Extra’. In 1995, she helped launch the station’s first dedicated consumer affairs programme, ‘On Your Behalf’, remaining through various refreshments and formats to make it the flagship Saturday morning show it is today, blending consumer advice, information and education with robust confrontation of unfair trading.

Linda and her programme have brought about real changes in the real lives of BBC Radio Ulster’s listeners, from industry wide initiatives to standardised travel insurance terms for those booking flights in Belfast but leaving from Dublin to forcing big name retailers to adopt a more transparent and fair approach to online services and deliveries to NI residents.

Linda is one of those rare presenters – someone who is perfectly matched to her role and her programme.  Every week, public service broadcasting is turned into a riveting radio listen, helped by a brilliant and deceptively effortless broadcasting performance. More than 20 years after she started, she’s still serving audiences stronger than ever: a listeners’ as well as a consumers’ champion.

Séamus Mac Géidigh: In Irish, the term ‘fathach fir’ is used to describe a person who is out of the ordinary, a man amongst men.  Séamus Mac Géidigh, who passed away suddenly on 4 July 2016 at the age of 54, was one such man.

He was a highly-respected journalist and broadcaster with RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta and was manager of the Doirí Beaga offices and studios in Donegal. Séamus, who was from Gort a’ Choirce in the Donegal Gaeltacht, began his working life as a broadcaster when he joined RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta in 1988. During his thirty years with the organisation he fulfilled a variety of roles. But it is as a passionate, unbiased and informed Gaelic games commentator that most listeners will remember Séamus, who was described as ‘the Donegal voice of Gaelic Games commentary’.

Fear é Séamus a bhí breá ábalta feoil a chur ar scéal agus an chuid is fearr a bhaint as daoine.  Bhí ardmheas air ar fud Dhún na nGall, na Gaeltachta agus níos faide ó bhaile mar fhear uasal, mar chraoltóir cumasach, díograiseach, ildánach, mar cheannaire foirne, mar shár thráchtaire spóirt, ach thar rud ar bith eile, cara mór ab ea é.

Billy McCarthy: Billy, who died after a short illness in November last, made a phenomenal contribution to the radio industry in Ireland, not only at board level in WLR for many years but particularly as ‘the voice of Waterford’ in his 27 years as presenter of the highly rated ‘Deise AM’. A former Director of WLR, Billy served on the board for over 10 years, during which time WLR built Ireland’s first purpose-built radio station outside of RTE in Dublin. Presenting, however, was Billy’s first and real love and it was as a current affairs broadcaster that he ranked amongst the very best. In the 10 am-12 noon weekday slot, his ‘Deise AM’ show was consistently the most listened to radio show in Waterford (JNLR) for a staggering 27 years, from 1989 right up to Billy’s untimely death last November.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny gave his first radio interview to Billy in WLR on the morning after he made controversial comments about “whingers” in his home town of Castlebar. Those comments, many feel, may have been the turning point of that election.  In that interview Billy challenged the Taoiseach on his comments and the audio was used nationwide in news coverage that day. In that same interview, meanwhile, Billy received a commitment from Enda Kenny on abolition of the Broadcasting levy.

Billy’s untimely death in November, at the young age of 62, sent shockwaves not only through the radio industry in Ireland but his beloved Waterford city and county.  The massive outpouring of grief from listeners to WLR FM in the days after his death illustrated just how important a figure he was to many; an integral part, indeed, of the daily lives of thousands of Waterfordians. President Michael D. Higgins, Taoiseach Enda Kenny and political leaders of all parties sent their personal condolences on news of his death. Billy is deeply missed his partner Des O’Keeffe, his mother Kay, his sister Celine, brothers Declan and Ronan and his extended family, relatives and many friends.

Joe King:  Joe King is the founder of BTS and has been a technical powerhouse for the Radio industry for more than 25 years, in a career that has crossed from the pirate radio industry to the era of licensed radio stations. His impact on the radio industry is well documented and he has worked across nearly every station in the industry whether RTÉ, independent, community, temporary or student radio stations. It is true to say that there isn’t a radio station in Ireland which hasn’t worked with Joe King at some stage of its radio life.

Joe is always at the end of the phone to solve transmission problems for radio stations the length and breadth of the country regardless of whether it’s the middle of the night, early in the morning or the end of a long day. He is more likely to be found half way up a mountain fixing problems for a radio station experiencing dead air than behind a desk. He has worked knee deep in snow, battered by high winds and soaked by heavy rain to get radio stations back on the air.

As a technician and engineer Joe is never to the forefront in radio but that exactly who the Hall of Fame Award sets out to honour. Joe’s dedication to radio is unquestionable, he’s a radio anorak and a professional, and is always updating his knowledge to ensure the industry has the technology to grow and innovate.
