New Single Release from Irish-French Band A Ritual Sea

A Ritual Sea formed in 2016 over a love of film, dream pop, shoegaze and all things esoteric. The four-piece from Dublin and Paris, released their debut single ‘Serpentine’ in late 2016, going on to support the likes of Manchester psych-folk artist, Jane Weaver and Berlin drone merchants, The Underground Youth, among others in 2017.

Their new single ‘Seasons (Like You)’ is the second track from their forthcoming debut album, due for release in early 2019. It explores the themes of fear, paranoia and falling in love, while the self-made video invokes a dream-like elemental state of colour and confusion.

The band will launch their new single on Thursday 9th of August, in Drop Dead Twice on Frances Street, Dublin 8 – FREE admission, alongside the fantastic Hostess (ex CAP PAS PCAP) and Father!

Government Agrees On Legislative Measures To Tackle Ticket Touting

The Minister for Business, Enterprise and Innovation, Heather Humphreys T.D., today announced that the Government has agreed on legislative measures to tackle ticket touting.

The proposed legislation would ban the above-face value resale of tickets for sporting and entertainment events in designated venues with a capacity of 1,000 or over.  It would also prohibit the use of bot software to purchase tickets in excess of the number permitted by event organisers. The legislation will also give effect to the commitment given to UEFA to ban the unauthorised transfer and use of tickets for matches and official events taking place in Ireland during the EURO 2020 Championship.

In order to implement these measures, the Government will support and amend the Prohibition of Above-Cost Ticket Touting Bill introduced by Deputy Noel Rock and Deputy Stephen Donnelly.

“It’s wrong that people who make no contribution to sport or music can profit from the resale of tickets for sell-out matches and shows. In doing so, they deprive genuine fans of the opportunity to attend these events, and the time has come to put a stop to it.”

“I am confident that this Bill will have the support of the main sporting bodies, of many artists and promoters in the entertainment industry, and of music and sports fans right across the country. It is also a tangible example of new politics at work and in that regard I want to acknowledge the efforts of Deputies Noel Rock and Stephen Donnelly, who have engaged constructively on this matter so we can bring forward workable proposals which will benefit genuine fans. I look forward to continuing to work with both Deputies and our Oireachtas colleagues in progressing this Bill.” – Minister Humphreys

“For too long, genuine music and sports fans have been ripped off by organised ticket touting. While there has always been some low-level touting, the move to online sales and ‘bots’ has brought ticket touting to an industrial scale. Recent assertions to a Westminster committee link some of this to organised crime, based partly in Ireland. Time and time again, fans are being told that all tickets are sold out on the primary sales website, while almost immediately being able to buy those same tickets at much higher prices on other websites. Fans suffer, as to artists and sporting bodies. This legislation is a strong move to protect fans, artists and sporting bodies, and I very much look forward to getting it through the Oireachtas and into law as quickly as possible.” – Deputy Stephen Donnelly

“With this legislation accepted by Cabinet, Ireland is set to take the lead in effectively banning ticket touting, subject to the approval of the Dáil. The legislation proposed is ambitious and sensible: it ensures an effective ban on ticket touting and also a ban on bots from snapping up tickets. I have no doubt that for sports and music fans, this legislation will be a game changer. It’s now my ambition that, should this Bill be passed by the Dáil and become law in Ireland, we see other nations across Europe replicating it. For a backbencher, getting a Bill before Cabinet has been a new challenge, but one which was aided by Minister Humphreys’ support and foresight.” –  Deputy Noel Rock

Wyvern Lingo Receive IMRO Award

IMRO took the opportunity to present Bray trio Wyvern Lingo with their IMRO Award, in recognition of their Independent number one self-titled debut album ahead of their guest appearance with Grace Jones in Dublin’s Trinity College.

The IMRO Number 1 Award was introduced to acknowledge IMRO members who reach number 1 in the album charts here in Ireland.

Released in February 2018, Wyvern Lingo recorded the album in Dublin with producer James Kelly, with additional work taking place in Donegal, London and Cologne.

The trio self-released their first EP – ‘The Widow Knows’ in 2014, which brought them to the attention of Irish independent label Rubyworks. Extensive international touring followed with James Vincent McMorrow and fellow-Bray native Hozier, and a second EP – ‘Letter To Willow’, followed in 2016.

These songs are a collection of experiences both separate and shared. Experiences that shape how we view the world, and how we’ve come to terms with the way our lives have unfolded.” – Wyvern Lingo

The band have a summer filled with festival dates in Ireland, the UK and Germany before their own headline date in The Academy, Dublin, on 28th September.

Nathan Carter Releases ‘Winnie O’Neil’

He’s a proud Liverpool man, with a well-documented Irish ancestry. What many people don’t know, however, is that if it wasn’t for a chance sequence of events, Nathan Carter could well have been born and raised in America.

The family story is the subject of his latest single, ‘Winnie O`Neill’ which the singer has penned in tribute to his late great-grandparents.

It’s a fascinating tale of love, hope, heartbreak and survival, and it’s one Nathan says he’s proud to share in song: “Many years ago, my great-grandparents, Jimmy & Winnie O`Neill were a young, newly married couple living in Co Down. Like so many people at that time, they saved hard to set-off for a better life in America.

The first leg of their epic journey took them to Liverpool, where they were then due to board a boat for New York.  However, their plans were cut devastatingly short when their money was stolen and they were unable to travel any further. As a result, Winnie and Jimmy had no choice but to settle in Liverpool.

It’s a city they fell in love with and thankfully, made their life-long home, raising a family of ten children, one of whom was my grandmother, Anne O’Neill. Now affectionately known to us as ‘Nan’. She married a young man called John McCoy, my grandfather. Their daughter Noreen married Ian Carter – and they are my mum and dad!

The story of how my family came to live in Liverpool has always fascinated me and I often wondered how things could have been so different for all us, had they made it to America. I’m a proud Liverpool man, so I’m thankful they decided to stick around and make it work!

As a family, we’re really proud of Winnie and Jimmy for how they turned things around and it’s a story we love to tell people. I’m delighted to be able to share this story in song and hope that people enjoy it as much as we do!

‘Winnie O`Neill’ is now available to download on iTunes.

Áine Cahill Shares New Single and Video

Up and coming Irish favourite  Áine Cahill releases her brand new single ‘Beauty Is A Lie’, her first since signing to East West Records and it is available on streaming platforms now!

Written by Áine and Jessica Sharman (Ward Thomas) and produced by Jessica, the soulful ‘Beauty Is A Lie’ is a sassy, spectral beauty which Áine says “calls out all the bullshit we see day to day on social media. We all do it. People only show an edited version of themselves, the side they think is ‘the best’, but this is the world we are living in. I hate it, but I love it at the same time.

The new single is accompanied by a stunning video, directed by Will Dohrn (MIA). “The lyrics of the song, particularly ‘hide behind the canvas’ contained inner meanings of how we all portray an image of ourselves to the world” said Will. “I thought the perfect way to illustrate this was by using the actual devices in which we take and see these images”.

‘Beauty Is A Lie’ follows a stellar 2017 for Áine Cahill – from the breakthrough success of sultry single ‘Plastic’ through to the massive ‘Blood Diamonds’, being tipped by everyone from The Line Of Best Fit to The Sunday Times Culture along the way. The 23 year old also spent the year playing a host of acclaimed shows ranging from a sold out St Pancras Church, a sold-out Irish Tour, festival sets at Glastonbury, Latitude, Field Day, Secret Garden Party, Great Escape and more, followed by huge support tours for JP Cooper and Kodaline.

So far 2018 has seen Áine working on new music as well as playing two special intimate shows in London and Dublin as well as a star turn at this years Great Escape Festival.

King Kong Company Share Latest Video

Festival specialists King Kong Company are back with a bang, with their just released latest single ‘My Name is Now’. This sultry summer thumper burns with a slow electro skank. A slight departure for a band whose late night thumping festival sets have become the stuff of legend, the intensity on this one is turned down a notch, but the groove is cranked up to 11. The track explores our fascination with legacy. A few souls are capable creating great art, others choose to destroy on a grand scale and some scrawl willies on bathroom walls. This track trawls it all, leaving its own mark in the form of a signature King Kong Company video that delves into a twisted world of cyberpunk voyeurism.

‘My Name is Now’ is the first of a set of tracks that King Kong Company will be releasing this year. The lads drafted in Ali Staton for mixing and production duties on this groove. Ali has previously worked with Tricky, Pulp, dEUS and Simply Red (but the less said about that last one the better!).

This new track and video features Sue O’Neill on vocals. Sue has been a regular King Konger since the band’s first ever Electric Picnic performance back in 2013. That gig gave birth to KKC’s legendary festival status, and the legend has been growing steadily since.

Last month the band enhanced their already impressive festival credentials by releasing a mini documentary about their epic 12-hour dash from headlining the Midnight Circus stage at Body&Soul to a main stage slot in Silver Hayes at Glastonbury . With more festival gigs in the U.K. and mainland Europe under their belt this summer, the King Kong legend is starting to spread.

When KKC play a festival they invariably get called back for a bigger and better slot. The first-time King Kong Company played Electric Picnic it was on the Body&Soul Stage seven years ago. Last year King Kong Company played the Electric Arena, and even though it was 3PM on a Sunday afternoon, and even though Waterford were playing in the All Ireland Hurling Final, 10,000 wonderful lunatics turned up and tore the roof off the place. It was a special gig – watch it here. The band play a headline slot at Indiependence this year, having worked their way up from playing on a tiny mud splattered trailer in the lashing rain seven years ago.

Not content with dominating festival fields, King Kong Company have brought their sensory assault indoors, selling out venues all over the country. This October they play their biggest headline show to date when they take to the stage in The Olympia Theatre Dublin. Expect another savage summer season from these simian savants, and consider this latest single an entrée.

21/7 – Townlands Festival – Macroom
4/8 – Indiependence – Mitchelstown
5/8 – Beatyard – Dun Laoghaire
18/08 – Canal Quarter Festival – Tullamore
25/08 – Daytripper – Waterford
Electric Picnic? – Watch This Space
13/10 – The Olympia Theatre – Dublin

Alex & Echoes Share New Single and Announce Live Date

Alex & Echoes release their latest single ‘Come Alive’ today with the duo also set to play The Button Factory on 27th September.

History dictates that pop music is always evolving. Specific genres often have their moment in the sun and trends come to prominence before they drift away again, but the essence of a killer song never really changes. The hallmarks never go out of style – expertly crafted songwriting with hooks that burrow deep into the memory, delivered by vocalists with power, poise and an innate ability to convey a spectrum of emotions.

These are attributes that Dublin duo Alex & Echoes have in abundance, as demonstrated by their independently released debut track ‘Whiskey’. Recently signed to CSR Recordings the electro-pop pair already possess a body of work that signposts bigger things as 2018 unfolds.

That voice belongs to Jessica Smith, a young talent who comes from a lineage of accomplished vocalists – her father, for example, is a trained baritone. Meanwhile, producer and instrumentalist Cormac Butler’s roots in music go back to childhood when he was taught the violin. Although ultimately far more enamoured by piano and guitar, it gave him the grounding to turn his hand to whatever intrigues him. As Jessica jokes, “Cormac will say he can’t play an instrument and the next thing I know he’s like a wizard at it.

Both Jessica and Cormac started out playing separately in live bands, but grew disheartened with the band format. “I got into music production when I decided to go it alone,” recalls Cormac. “I couldn’t rely on other people and there were too many opinions.” Jessica shared a similar experience. “It sounds a bit selfish,” she adds almost apologetically, “but I wanted to have more control over it.

One of Jessica’s earliest breaks came when she was invited by a large American indie label to experiment with some sessions in New York. Before Ireland’s current renaissance for electro, urban and pop, she felt like she’d never find a producer at home with the international scaled talent to match her ambitions. “But when Cormac sent me some tracks, it was better than what I was working on in the States.

They first met in Malahide on the outskirts of Dublin and forged an immediate creative connection. “I just couldn’t believe her voice, she sounded like a pop star,” says Cormac, still audibly impressed by his collaborator’s ability. “And we hit it off straight away which was very important. You can meet people who are great musicians, but you have to be able to spend twelve hours a day with them in the studio.

At first their roles were black-and-white: Cormac would focus on the tracks and Jessica would work on the topline and lyrics. But like all great creative partnerships those boundaries blurred over time. They discovered that they could not only challenge each other to raise their game, but their traits allowed the other to shine. A few years on, their work together is cohesive and complementary rather than compartmentalised.

‘Come Alive’ is perhaps the best example of the direction that Alex & Echoes are heading in. Recalling the infectiousness of Sigala’s ‘Sweet Lovin’’ and the towering throwback pop of prime Whitney Houston, it jumps with an exuberance that makes it equally as home in clubs or daytime radio. Just as importantly, the production displays a real command of dynamics: modernist, cutting edge sounds burst to the forefront, but the nineties-tinged house keys are given the space to shine.

Songs such as ‘Drown In Gold’ are informed by a collage of sources, from experiences relatable to young people the world over to personal memories and observations from their circle of friends. “The best songs come when we sit down and just talk about what’s been going on,” summarises Cormac. “If we haven’t already got a track prepared, we start to play played on whatever emotion is already there,” adds Jessica, “and we often find that the vibe comes from the conversation we had beforehand.

While Alex & Echoes can deliver anything from straight-to-the-point bangers to moody slow-burners, they’re eager not to define themselves by a single sonic approach. Chvrches and Disclosure are artists the duo admire, but their sound can go anywhere from its core electro-pop component. “Pop is so broad these days that you don’t need to limit yourself,” is the closest Cormac comes to defining their approach.

Another new track ‘Wish You Were Here’ flavours their cocktail of bass and beats with some power ballad bombast. It’s a song that would clearly shine when stripped right back to just vocals and piano, which reveals that Alex & Echoes have a timeless heart at the centre of their contemporary productions.

Although they use an array of loops, pads and trigger to bring their layered sound to the live arena, Alex & Echoes are committed to ensuring that their performances are energised with live elements – Cormac even brings some six-stringed guitar virtuosity to proceedings. So far, they’ve only played a trio of shows alongside other key artists from Ireland’s burgeoning electronic scene: Soulé, Hare Squead, and the Indiependence Music and Arts Festival in Cork. But there are also tentative plans to collaborate with singer-songwriter and labelmate DAY_S.

As for what comes next? Alex & Echoes share a range of burning ambitions but mostly they’re focused on the short term. “Over the next year I’d like our name to be on the map,” assesses Jessica, “so people know our songs, see us at festivals and we get our name out there so there’s a bit of a buzz about us.

The ability is there for all to see and the parts are falling into place. It’s seems to be only a matter of time before Alex & Echoes are a hot tip for the top, both in Ireland and beyond.

Saint Sister Share New Single and Announce Album Release

Saint Sister are set to release their debut album’Shape of Silence’ on 5th October 2018. Today they share their new single ‘You Never Call’.

Known for their stunning vocal harmonies and fusion of traditional Irish folk and minimalist electronica, on this track they deliver a chorus with a vocal performance much bigger than anything we’ve seen previously from the band. Gemma Doherty and Morgan MacIntyre began making music together after meeting at University in Dublin. Their first EP ‘Madrid’ was a breakout success. 2 million streams on Spotify in the first year as well as daytime playlisting on BBC radio 1 propelled them to a European tour with Lisa Hannigan and a single via Communion Singles Club. In September they embark on a 40 date headline world tour across North America, Australia, and Europe to promote their debut album including an Irish tour with a date in Dublin’s Olympia on 11th October.

‘Shape of Silence’ was recorded with long term co-producer Alex Ryan of Hozier. “We found a really good energy between the three of us, and over the course of time have started trusting each other’s instincts a lot more and getting comfortable pushing the boundaries” explains Doherty of the recording process with Alex Ryan.
