Damien Dempsey Shares New Single ‘Apple Of My Eye’

Damien Dempsey has shared his latest single, ‘Apple Of My Eye’ with Wildwood Kin.

‘Apple of my Eye’ is the first track to be taken from Damien’s new album, ‘UNION’, which will be released on 30th November 2018.

Featuring 14 tracks, ‘UNION’ is an album of collaborations showcasing new songs and re-imagined Damo classics.

What Damien says about Wildwood Kin:

“I performed with these amazing ladies in the Roundhouse in London last St Patrick’s Day, and they were deadly. Very unique sound, amazing voices and harmonies, and knock out songs sung with passion and guts, their very special.

I’m chuffed they were so gracious to sing on this song that I wrote in a boiling basement in Brooklyn in August 2001, Their wonderful harmonies lift my heart, check them out on youtube, they savage.  Thanks ladies for the loan of the magic.”

About ‘UNION’

“I love collaborating with people who move me with their music and lyrics and soul and voice.

And when we collaborate with music we always learn something from each other and take a little bit of each other’s spirit and magic away with us.

You always come up with something that you wouldn’t have if alone, souls and minds mingle, kindred spirits connect and dance, creativity crackles, and the results can be wonderful.

Union is a myriad of styles and a bit of a melting pot but I adore melting pots and I reckon there’s something for everyone here.”

Talos Shares ‘See Me’

Cork native Talos (a.k.a. Eoin French) has announced the release of new single ‘See Me’. The track was produced by Talos, Ross Dowling (James Vincent McMorrow) and mixed by Damian Taylor (Bjork, Arcade Fire).

“The song is about an inability to love someone,”explains Eoin on the inspiration behind the track. “I drew a lot of lyrics from the story of the serial killer, Ed Kemper. The irrepressible power of that kind of need to be seen, or wanted, fascinates me. We all want to be accepted, to feel loved, but sometimes our inability to see our own qualities causes us to destroy the very possibility of it.” Further new music from Talos to be announced soon.

Following a recent UK tour with Editors, Talos has announced a string of live dates in the run up to Christmas, which includes a sold-out show at London’s Omeara on November 22nd. Alongside his headline UK and EU run in November, the band will support Peter, Bjorn and John on a selection of their North American and Canada dates into December and will be supporting Aurora on their US tour in early 2019. Full tour details below.

Talos debut album ‘Wild Alee’ was originally released in April 2017 and was rereleased in June this year as a special deluxe reissue on BMG. Produced and mixed by Talos and Ross Dowling — whose credits include albums by James Vincent McMorrow and Bell X1 — ‘Wild Alee’ is a personal, emotive and ambitious electronic pop record; one that both looks to the past and signposts to the future. Upon its original release overseas in April 2017, ‘Wild Alee’ was hailed as “a spectacularly assured debut” (The Irish Times), while The Independent called it “stunning,” and The Line Of Best Fit raved that the music “will leave your hairs standing on end.” Some of the earliest fans in the States included The New York Times T Magazine, which praised the songs’ “taut, chilling complexity,” and The FADER, which swooned for their “swirling splendour”. The record garnered love from BBC Radio 1, racked up more than 20 million streams on Spotify, and made the shortlist for the prestigious RTÉ Choice Music Prize for Irish Album of the Year.

Irish Musicians and Music Industry Come Together to Support Irish Homeless Charities

A host of Ireland’s musicians have joined forces as ‘Street Lights’ to create a single and album to generate funds for the most vulnerable, our homeless. Peter McVerry Trust, Simon Community Ireland and Focus Ireland will be the recipients of all profits of the single and album sales, which they have agreed will go directly to rehoming and rehousing on a national level.

The Street Lights collective, consisting of artists and Irish Music Industry professionals, have come together to record and release Simon and Garfunkel’s classic single ‘Homeward Bound’. Recorded in Camden Studios with producer/arranger Cian Boylan, the single features performances from a host of prolific artists including The High Hopes Choir, Gary Lightbody, Cathy Davey, Villagers, Loah, Bono, Roisin O, Join Me In The Pines, Saint Sister, Colm Mac Con Iomaire. Street Lights single ‘Homeward Bound’ is available across all digital platforms now and is followed by the release of the full ‘Street Lights’ album in December. People can also text street lights to 50300 if they would like to donate €4 to the Street Lights Project.

15 songs have been carefully selected by artists and organisers to feature on the self titled album ‘Street Lights’ which will be released on Friday 7 December. The album features songs from Bell X1, Snow Patrol, Saint Sister, Richard Hawley with Lisa Hannigan, James Vincent McMorrow, Damien Dempsey, Luka Bloom, Villagers, Stephen James Smith, David Gray, The Frames, Lisa O’Neill, Glenn & Ronan and Celtic Woman.

Speaking about the stunning single and upcoming album release, The High Hopes Choir said: “It’s been such a joy to work with so many amazing musicians, artists and people from across the music industry to release this single and album to the public. We hope they love it as much as we all do, and buy it to help our homeless citizens.”

The release of the stunning Street Lights single is the brainchild of Keith Troy who was put in touch with Sinéad Troy of (IASCA/Yangaroo) for advice on how to make it happen. Sinéad Troy quickly realised the potential of the project – a planned single release evolved into an album campaign following conversations with Aoife Woodlock (Other Voices and Music Producer) and Janine Nallen (CEO of Celtic Collections and Liffey Records) with the trio working tirelessly to bring the Street Lights Collective together and bring the project to life. Along with the artists involved over 20 music industry professionals, covering areas from photography to public relations to design to marketing, have given their time and support for free to help raise much needed funds that will go directly to the three charities.

Speaking about the release of the single and album, Aoife Woodlock of the Street Lights Collective said:“Homeward Bound was the perfect song on many levels. At Christmas, so many are homeward bound from all over the world. This project was the coming together of the music industry in Ireland to stand up and to support our homeless citizens.”

Speaking about their involvement in the project, Annmarie Brennan communications and marketing manager for Dublin Simon Community said: “With the support of everyone involved, this will have a life changing impact to the lives of vulnerable people living in unimaginable circumstances. The funds raised will enable us to continue delivering more permanent homes, ensuring that people never have to face the uncertainty and anxiety of homelessness again.”

Focus Ireland advocacy manager Roughan MacNamara said of the Street Lights Collective Project: “We are so glad to be involved in this great Street Lights project as it will raise vital funds and help highlight the homeless crisis is a different way through music and the funds raised will directly help Focus Ireland’s work to support families and people who are homeless or at risk of losing their homes. It means so much and also shows people who are homeless that others are thinking about them and trying to help them to find the way home.”

Speaking about the Street Lights Collective project, Peter McVerry Trust said: “It is brilliant to see so many people come together to help three charities working to provide solutions to the homeless crisis day in and day out. Any proceeds received from Peter McVerry Trust will be an enormous help to our work and the money raised will go into our housing led response to homelessness.

‘Homeward Bound’ is available across all digital platforms now and will be followed by the full album ‘Street Lights’ which will be available from Friday 7 December 2018 from all good record stores, and across all digital platforms.

G KAYE Releases New Track Featuring Stephanie Rainey

On Friday, rising artist/producer G KAYE releases his new track ‘Shadows’ featuring Stephanie Rainey.  After emerging last year G KAYE secured his first major label credit with Warner UK, producing Stephanie Rainey’s track ‘Nothing Of You Left To Love’ which was co-written with Ed Sheeran’s frequent collaborator Amy Wadge.

Since then he has established himself as an artist to watch having gone on to write and produce tracks for some of Ireland’s top emerging artists including Hermitage Green and Robert Grace, along with working across the world in studios from LA to London.

‘Shadows’ showcases multi-instrumentalist G KAYE at his best with stomping beats and hooks aplenty, it is a sonically rich track that brings together a hypnotising fusion of electro-pop with subtle funk overtones. Combined with gloriously lush vocals from Stephanie Rainey, the song has every capability to top the streaming charts/playlists and is almost certain to mark another milestone in G KAYE’s career.

Speaking of the track G KAYE said: “I’ve worked with lots of really cool and talented mixing and mastering engineers over the years but I could never really nail the sound I was after so for ‘Shadows’ I locked myself into the studio and went after it. It was the most stupid and brilliant decision. I spent hours listening to instrumental versions of my favorite tracks – EW&F, MJ, Dre. When the track was finished I looked like something out of the Thriller music video.

‘Shadows” is available now across all digital platforms.

Hozier Shares New Video For ‘Movement’

‘Movement’, the arresting new video and single by Hozier, is out today via Island Records. The video features distinguished ballet dancer and performance artist Sergei Polunin. Sergei featured in Steven Cantor’s 2016 documentary ‘Dancer’, in a David LaChapelle-directed performance which was set to Hozier’s worldwide smash hit ‘Take Me To Church’. Of the collaboration between the two artists, Hozier says:

“I was first confronted by Sergei’s talent when I saw a performance of his set to my music in collaboration with David LaChapelle. I believe one of the greatest things to become of your own work is for it to form part of another artist’s vision or execution. That performance itself gave rise to ideas for this song, so I was incredibly proud to work with Sergei on this video. He is a once-in-a-generation talent. He’s a man of incredible skill and artistry and shows a dedication to his art form that I find inspiring. I’m thrilled to share this with everyone.”

Sergei Polunin says:

“When I found out that Hozier wanted me to be in his new music video for the song ‘Movement’, I was over the moon with happiness. “He did it again”, I thought when I heard the song – he created a masterpiece. His music inspired and moved me before and, he did it again with this song ‘Movement’”.

‘Movement’ has already proved a standout track at Hozier’s recent live shows across North America. Currently embarking on a European tour, he continues on to the UK and Ireland for a sold out run of shows in December. See full tour schedule below.

The response and acclaim for Hozier’s recent shows and music has been widespread. His highly-praised new EP ‘Nina Cried Power’ has been streamed over 25 million times on Spotify since its release. The lead single and title track was dubbed “startling” by The Guardian, and The Evening Standard remarked in their 5* live review of his previous London show: “His new songs are elevated into the realms of the celestial”.

Born Andrew Hozier-Byrne, Hozier is an award-winning musician, singer and songwriter from Ireland. His number one, debut studio album ‘Hozier’ was released in October 2014 and includes the multi-Platinum, Grammy-nominated anthem ‘Take Me To Church’, which won BBC Song Of The Year, and later ‘Best Song’ for Hozier at the 2015 Ivor Novello Awards. Another single taken from the album, ‘Someone New’, won a BMI London Award in 2016, and the official video featured acclaimed Game Of Thrones star Natalie Dormer. Hozier released the album’s closing track ‘Cherry Wine’ as a charity single to create awareness of the domestic abuse problems worldwide, with proceeds benefiting a series of international domestic abuse charities. The official video features 3-time Oscar-nominated actress Saoirse Ronan. Hozier followed up the success of his debut LP with the track ‘Better Love’, taken from the soundtrack of the Warner Bros’ adventure film The Legend Of Tarzan. His recent EP ‘Nina Cried Power’ was released on Island Records earlier this year and features iconic soul singer Mavis Staples, as well as the legendary organist Booker T.

More new music will follow from Hozier in due course.

Premiere Release for Eithne | The First Full Scale Irish Language Opera

This double CD from the RTÉ lyric fm label with extensive sleeves note is based on the first concert performance of Eithne in over one hundred years by Irish National Opera and the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra. Conducted by Fergus Sheil, Eithne features a stellar cast of Irish singers including Orla Boylan, Robin Tritschler, Imelda Drumm and Gavan Ring.

The dramatic plot of Eithne is drawn from the magical legend Éan an Cheoil Bhinn (The Bird of Sweet Music). Composed by the English/Irish composer Robert O’Dwyer, the libretto was written by renowned academic and playwright Tomás Ó Ceallaigh. The story follows the adventures of Ceart, chosen heir to the High King of Ireland, and his ne’er-do-well brothers Art and Neart. Together they travel to the Land of Eternal Youth (Tír na nÓg) in pursuit of a mysterious bird. Unbeknown to the brothers the bird is Eithne, daughter of the King of Tír na nÓg. Cursed by her father, she must remain in birdlike form until a worthy warrior defeats the gigantic Guardian Spirit of their land, thus winning Eithne’s hand and releasing her from the spell.

The music of Eithne is immediately appealing, sitting firmly within the sphere of the late-nineteenth European operatic tradition, while also incorporating elements of Irish musical motifs. If the influence of Wagner occasionally looms large, the soft consonants, long vowels and in-line rhyming of the vocal score reveal the Irish language as completely apt for the operatic stage.

The Irish Times in 1909 reported that the premiere of  Eithne, conducted by the composer (grasping a length of penny-cane in lieu of his forgotten baton) was ‘…enthusiastically received…’ Its revival more than a century later was greeted by a full house in the National Concert Hall, Dublin and was described by critics as a ‘…remarkable revival of an intriguing opera.’

This double CD recording of Eithne from the RTÉ lyric fm label with 68 page booklet containing the full libretto and English translation along with Gavan Ring’s essay about the composition of the opera by Robert O’Dwyer is a must for all music collectors!

★★★★★ A superb production … a triumph of musicality, performance and dedication.
