Insufficient Funs for Irish Tour

Girls and Boys just want to have fun and these ones certainly do, with Sam Comerford playing the monstrous and rare bass saxophone with his now trademark infectious energy alongside Matthew Jacobson’s playful drumming and ear for a catchy, quirky tune. Known as Insufficent Funs, the pair are set to embark on an Irish tour this February.

The duo – two of the preeminent figures in Ireland’s creative/improvised music scene – have been cavorting around Europe since early 2016. The music has been described as “Ed Blackwell and Don Cherry meets Autechre” (composer/performer Matthew Noone), “like a slow-burning Nirvana” (All About Jazz) and “moving seamlessly between gnarly grooves and loose, open textured freedom, using simple ‘compositions’ as starting points for adventures at the outer reaches of music” (Cormac Larkin, Irish Times).

Performance highlights so far include 12 Points Festival in San Sebastian, Jazzy Colors Festival in Paris and Another Love Story Festival in Meath, Ireland. They also released their debut eponymous EP to strong reviews from publications at home and abroad, being hailed as “delightfully unhinged from expectation” and “intricate and thoughtful and very accessible” by influential Irish bloggers Nialler9 and Remy Connolly respectively.

February 2019 will see the Dublin/Brussels based joy-seekers romp around Ireland, developing new material to be recorded later in the year for their first full-length album. This will include performances in Derry, Dublin, Kilkenny, Galway and Cork.

Expect revelry.

Brand-New RTÉ Campaign To Choose The Nation’s Favourite Folk Song Launched

Ireland’s Favourite Folk Song, is a brand new RTÉ series and national campaign in association with IMRO to identify and celebrate the songs that define us as a people.

Throughout the centuries, folk music has immortalised the real, live experiences of the citizens who have lived on, or passed through this island. Ireland has a vast archive of beautiful folk songs, both in English and in Irish, which its citizens draw on in times of joy and sorrow, to entertain, or to capture big personal or historic moments. Many of these songs have been passed down through families for generations. Some of these songs were written by Irish people, some brought in from other cultures, but what sets folk music apart is that it captures the eternal stories, hopes and struggles of ordinary people.

And every one of us has a favourite: a song we sing at family events and get-togethers, or a song that is dear to us. And now RTÉ is asking the people of Ireland to tell us what their favourite songs are, and why.

Between now and 8th February, we’re asking you to log onto www.rte.ie/culture, click on the Nominate section and tell us what your favourite folk song is – and why you love it. It can be a love song, a political song, a song about nature, life, loss, emigration, whatever. It can be in Irish or in English. It can be an Irish song or an international folk song that we have taken to our hearts as a people. As long as it’s a folk song, and you love it, then it’s eligible for consideration.

Once we’ve gathered your nominations, an independent jury of music lovers and experts – see list below – will review the list and put together a shortlist of ten folk songs they feel best capture the public’s favourites, but also the spirit and story of Ireland.  On 19th April, RTÉ will announce the 10 shortlisted folk songs to the nation in a special edition of The Ronan Collins Show on RTÉ Radio 1. Over the following five weeks, people will be invited to discuss the songs and tell us which one is their favourite of the 10.

To help people to make an informed choice, a brand new 5-part series, Ireland’s Favourite Folk Song, presented by internationally acclaimed Irish singer and folk legend Mary Black, begins on RTÉ One on 21st April. Each episode will tell the story behind two of the shortlisted songs. Audiences will be also able to discover more about each song across RTÉ Radio 1 and on rte.ie/culture.

“Folk music is in my blood. Many of these songs have shaped and defined my life. So I’m excited to be part of a conversation that celebrates our rich folk-song heritage”  Mary Black

The song chosen by you as the nation’s best-loved folk song will be announced live on The Late Late Show in May 2019.

We hope the public will embrace the spirit of this campaign, which is to celebrate one of the things we do best – and inspire the nation to sing, perform and love folk music.

For further information on the project and the selection process, please go to www.rte.ie/culture.

Digg Deep Release ‘Soak It Up’

Dublin based Digg Deep release their second single ‘Soak It Up’ along with stunning choreography and hazy visuals of the accompanying music video.

‘Soak It Up’ is the second single from Dublin based Digg Deep which is the solo project of musician Julia Mahon. The new single is a tropical synth pop banger which draws influence from genres such as RnB, pop, groove/soul, and anything 70s/80s inspired.

With a swirling mix of lush synths and brass, crisp guitar, and catchy vocal melodies, ‘Soak It Up’ takes on a fresh original groove with chunks of experimental and noise elements, thirsty for an avant-garde pop sound.

Speaking on the song/video – which features hip hop dancers Jay Asolo and Tobi Omoteso – Julia says “I reached out to them (Jay & Tobi) as they have such an openness to the free and emotional approach to pop/hip hop dancing. The video showcases some abstract takes on krumping, mixed with their own contemporary moves. It encapsulates a sense of freedom around one very emotional concept – the inability to please someone else.”

Since the debut single ‘Before We Were Born’, Digg Deep has evolved their live set into an exciting, multi-instrumental performance.

Digg Deep launch their second single in Bello Bar next Saturday night (Jan 19th) with support from Sacred Skin (featuring ex members of Bitch Falcon and Vameel – self-proclaimed “side-pop”, settling somewhere between the darker nooks of pop and the lighter shores of the sonic abyss), and Jeag (the solo project of producer James Eager which mixes grainy sampled loops and pulsing, bass heavy rhythms).

Tickets are available on Eventbrite now for €10.

Cry Monster Cry Share ‘Citadel – The Richey McCourt Remix’

Alt-folk brothers Cry Monster Cry return with a contemporary, pop focused retelling of their gorgeous track ‘Citadel’.

‘Citadel – The Richey McCourt Remix’ was borne out of Sunday morning coffee and chats that the Sutton natives had with a producer friend, Richey McCourt (whose recent work with electro-pop artist Laoise has garnered critical acclaim)

Richie & Jamie’s enthusiasm for the current music landscape and the cross fertilisation of genres – from folk to hip-hop, country to pop, inspired McCourt to spend the next 12 hours working on a remix of their recently released single ‘Citadel’.

“We left Richey’s studio that morning and went about our day really- and then both of us had a track land in our WhatsApp group at about 9pm that night from Richey.’ explains Jamie.

“He loved the song we had released, Citadel, and wanted to experiment with trying a different soundscape with it – something he thought we would probably hate and say thanks, but no thanks! But one listen and we were hooked. He managed to bring a new atmosphere into the track completely – but hasn’t compromised the original sentiment and composition to do so,” continues lead vocalist Richie.

The Remix fuses warm synth sounds and beats with the trademark harmonies of Cry Monster Cry to create a track that stays true to the original – but as all remixes should do, finds the original’s best parts and shines a beaming light on them.

“For us, this was just one of those lovely surprises that we didn’t plan for, but are excited to let people hear. We were raised on acoustic, folk, singer-songwriters– that’s our passion, and our inspiration when we write. That’s what’s in our souls. Our live shows and the new tracks we have recorded retain that heavily- that’s our compass. But experimenting on this remix with someone we trusted and coming from a very organic place, has been a great change and a great experience for us.” explains Richie.

Change is inevitable. It’s the very essence of music. Tempos, rhythms, dynamics. Rising, falling, swelling and settling like the tide. Following on from the success of their debut album, ‘Rhythm of Dawn, released to critical acclaim, Cry Monster Cry is embracing change.

Both the original version and this new imagining of ‘Citadel’ still hold the signature elements that Dublin brothers Richie and Jamie Martin have become known for; warm fraternal harmonies, thoughtful, unadorned instrumentation, evocative lyrics and beautiful melodies, but a visceral, more measured approach is also now apparent. The original version was recorded in the wilds of Donegal under the watchful eye of producer Tommy McLaughlin (Villagers, Bell X1, Luke Sital-Singh) the song presents a level of honesty and maturity that is new for the band.

Cry Monster Cry has come a long way since releasing their debut EP ‘The Fallen’in 2012.

The last two years have seen the band performing on television (The Imelda May Show, Other Voices) to millions of international viewers, as well as playing a string of sold out shows across Ireland and Europe.

Now the brothers are setting off on a new musical voyage, showcasing a conviction that has been sculpted through live performance and the bond felt between musician and audience, and a close-to-the-bone artistry that has been forged over time. Hopes, fears, successes, failures, love, anger, sadness, it’s all present.

To celebrate the release, the band will kick off a series of intimate concerts at Imbolc Festival in Derry on February 3rd. Following this, they will make their INEC debut, on a double headliner bill with Jack O’ Rourke in Killarney on March 9th. The dates will see the band playing previously unheard material, and fan favourites from their debut long-player ‘Rhythm of Dawn’ (2015).

Glen Hansard Announces Latest Album

Today Glen Hansard announces ‘This Wild Willing’, his fourth full-length album and a collection of songs that follows this second path, where he marries the sonic inventiveness of the best of his work in The Frames with the discipline he’s found as a songwriter and lyricist in his solo career.

“This collection of songs is mainly made up of those that came through while improvising and following the melodic lines and threads,” Hansard explained. “Sometimes when you take a small musical fragment and you care for it, follow it and build it up slowly, it can become a thing of wonder.”

Lead track ‘I’ll Be You, Be Me’ finds Hansard weighing the risks of such vulnerability, his restrained vocal masking the fury of the underlying instrumental’s building storm.  “I’ll be you, be me and I’ll be you/I’ll take your truth, your lies, your secrets,” he sings, negotiating the consuming potential of desire. There is danger here, but it is without rancor or ill-will – the danger of a hare with its belly exposed. There is also a duality in the invitation: the audience is drawn in just as surely as the song’s object to the immersive world conjured by the album.

‘This Wild Willing’ was conceived in Paris and recorded at the French Black Box studios with producer David Odlum and a core group of musicians that includes classically-trained Iranian musicians the Khoshravesh brothers, long-time Hansard associates Joe Doyle (bass) and ROMY (piano, vocals, string arrangements), and Dublin electronic musicians Deasy and Dunk Murphy (Sunken Foal). The album is grounded in a spirit of openness to invention and experimentation.

Jafaris to Share New Single Next Week

Jafaris drops ‘Time’ the 2nd single off his debut album ‘Stride’ on January 25th. With a mix of mainstream ambition coupled with intense introspection , the latest single is an unvarnished and nuanced peek into Jafaris’ personal life that ties rhythmic hip-hop beats directly to its narrative.

‘Time’ is a melodic motivating reminder about the hustle and bustle surrounding 21st century life. The lyrics are an implicit conversation in Jafaris’ head about the importance of making time for yourself in our busy lives and the freedom that comes with that, something everyone can relate to.

The uplifting acceptance anthem follows ‘Found My Feet’, a highly addictive and hypnotic beat about finding oneself and celebrating newfound confidence. Since the track’s release, the music video has received 2 nominations for the best music video in Ireland & UK.

The release of ‘Time’ is kicking off 2019 with a bang as Jafaris is unleashing his debut album ‘Stride’ on March 8th.
