Soda Blonde Share Debut Single

Soda Blonde is the new musical project of Dublin artists Faye O’Rourke, Adam O’Regan, Donagh Seaver O’Leary and Dylan Lynch, formerly of internationally acclaimed band Little Green Cars.

Taking on a whole new sound, the new collection of songs were written by O’Rourke throughout her early 20s, where she honed in on her unique lyrical style of gritty kitchen-sink realism, that evokes the tragic beauty of Karen Carpenter and the pop sensibilities of Annie Lennox.

The four members combine to create a stunning artistic collective – self-producing all aspects of their work. Involving visual concepts inspired by a crossover of artistic disciplines, such as Cindy Shermans striking self portraiture and a Lynchian approach to videography.

The result is a striking conceptual world in which the music inhabits. The music is strongly influenced by the modern soul-pop of Dev Hynes and the dark Scandinavian tones of Lykke Li and Little Dragon. O’Rourke’s powerful and hauntingly unique vocal combines with hard-hitting, atmospheric grooves to create pop music that is both emotionally affecting and deeply satisfying.

Stunning New Music from Co. Clare’s Aodán Coyne

Ennis born Aodán Coyne is a composer, songwriter, singer and producer. He is also a principal member of acclaimed folk band Socks In The Frying Pan, who has an enviable touring schedule particularly in the USA and on the continent. To decide then to release a solo album in parallel would be, to some, a non-enviable task! Not Aodán.

Once he had the concept for his album, within six months it was written. The album was written on the outskirts of Ennis overlooking the lake of Ballyalla, a surge of scenic calm in the midst of the creator’s hectic schedule. “In retrospect, it was a crazy time for me, the band was in full swing and I really had no idea what to expect from trying out my own music. However, I think the fact I was going for a truly authentic sound and not being fake helped the process a lot.”

The first single to be shared from this new body of work is the stunning ‘Chance & Gamble’. The track will be available from digital stores, and to stream via Spotify from June 21st, just ahead of Aodán going back on the road for festival season with Socks In The Frying Pan.

The album, ‘Gaps Between Stars’, will be live for pre-order within the next few weeks, and officially released this autumn. To record, Aodán teamed up with the same production team behind Emma Langford’s award winning record, ‘Quiet Giant’, Chris O’Brien and Graham Murphy at The Production Suite Dublin also noted for their work with Aslan, Westlife, Celtic Woman, Something Happens and The Stunning to mention just some. This 2019 long-play follows Coyne’s acclaimed 2015 debut ‘If We Only Knew’.

This time Coyne wanted to return to what he felt was always his first calling, being a singer-songwriter. “Just making the kind of music that I love. That sort of roots/singer-songwriter/folk thing, but with contemporary vibes and some experimental sounds. At the time I didn’t even know who, if anyone, would be interested. But I knew I just needed to record and get my music out.”

Girl Band Unveil Video and Announce Album & Tour

Girl Band are happy to announce their new album ‘The Talkies’ releasing through Rough Trade Records on September 27th, 2019. The album was produced by the band’s own Daniel Fox and will be available on Vinyl / CD / Stream. This is the follow up to their debut album ‘Holding Hands With Jamie’ that came out four years ago almost to the day. The band have also announced a short European / US tour.

‘The Talkies’ was recorded in November 2018 at Ballintubbert House, a stately home on the outskirts of Dublin “a few pay grades above what we’re used to”. The alien construction of Ballintubbert and its corridors help to navigate Girl Bands cataclysmic sound within a world of its own.

Bandmember Alan Duggan underlines this thought: “In many ways the idea behind the album was to make an audio representation of the house” –Daniel continues – “We recorded all the drums twice: once on the landing and once in the cellar, and during production we could actually cut in between both these sounds.”

Daniel, with his feet in both camps as musician and producer, explains: “After we cancelled the last tour we weren’t really writing together as much anymore so we were more into demoing and writing down parts then cutting them up, collaging them together in the computer and re-configuring them that way.”

The first track to be released from the album is ‘Shoulderblades’. Sonically, the landscape vacillates from a dissonant, distant horizon to a threatening “shh!” in your ear. The dark vocal line groove loops back on itself, building an unsettling momentum, caught up by the chugging snare with the ascending / descending snakes and ladders noise rock guitar that is so distinctively Girl Band.

The video for ‘Shoulderblades’ is directed by long-time collaborator Bob Gallagher, whose previous work with the band won him Best Irish Music Video at the Cork Film Festival and he was nominated for best director at the 2016 Berlin Music Video awards.

Bob on the video “I think it’s a real testament to the creative spirit of the band that they encouraged me to go outside my comfort zone and attempt to make something with no props or set dressing or conventional narrative, and to try and articulate an idea with dance and movement.

In Oona Doherty we found an incredible co-conspirator, I couldn’t imagine any other dancer being able to bring that combination of beauty and violence to the video. The idea grew out of Dara’s reference to the character of Ed Mordake, a man with two faces, so duality was a major theme. It was interesting for me to see how well dance allows an idea to live in the abstract so it can remain very open. It can mean what it means to the band, and also what it means to Oona and to myself. Hopefully that translates in a way that people watching it can find something in it to relate to, strange as it may be”.

Black Bank Folk to Release ‘Last Star Fall’

‘Last Star Fall ‘is the title track from Black Bank Folk’s second album, launching on 26th June 2019 at Lost Lane, Dublin.

“.. stories of love, faith, loss and vision are told with fluency and grace..The sweeping arc shaping this collection gives the stories of the Rising an immediacy that will likely resonate with a whole new audience.” 4/5 The Ticket- The Irish Times

“Superior Folk-rock with an historical message. A hugely rewarding listen.” 7/10 Hot Press

Above are quotes from their critically acclaimed debut, ‘RISING’, this new album promises much. Recorded at Orphan Studios and produced by Gavin Glass, and featuring a collaboration track with Damien Dempsey, the album shows a musical progression from the bands first outing. The band are hoping to revisit radio session with Pat Kenny on Newstalk, Cathal Murray and Fiachna Ó Braonáin on RTÉ Radio 1 and previous support from Radio 1, LMFM, KCRW and WLR

The band are made up of John and Mark Colbert, (stalwarts of the Irish music scene having played and toured with the likes of Damien Dempsey, Paddy Casey and Jerry Fish), James Sheeran, and traditional multi-instrumentalists Sean McKeon (2005 TG4 young musician of the year) and Sharon Hussey (winner of the Golden Fiddle awards, Melbourne 2010). The music brings together Indie and Folk with strands of traditional and Americana, and blends the ancient with the innovative.

James Sheeran explains,“I think a lot of the elements that made ‘RISING’ work so well have been retained but there just feels like there is a slightly darker, more contemporary edge to this record. Maybe it’s come from the different ways the two albums came about. With ‘RISING’ (a 1916 concept album) we were very conscious of telling other peoples’ stories as best we could and in a musical style that sat well with the raw subject material, whereas here you see a lot more of our opinions, feelings and ideas coming through. There is no one overarching theme to ‘Last Star Fall’ but I suppose a lot of it is to do with letting go and saying goodbye. To various things or people and for various reasons. It’s a record about endings but also about beginnings and while there are dark moments I really feel the hope radiates through. Breaking stuff down to build it up again. We’re really happy with it and we’re excited about getting it out there.”

Black Bank Folk launch ‘Last Star Fall’ at Dublin’s Lost Lane on 26th June, followed by an appearance at Tower Records on Dawson St at 5pm on 28th and round off the week at Kaleidoscope on the 29th.

Ben Reel To Release ‘Some Mercy’

Irish artist Ben Reel released his current album ‘Land Of Escape’ in the spring of 2018 featuring 12 new tracks. This was the 8th studio album recorded and produced in his home studio in South Armagh. ‘Some Mercy’ will be the last single to be released from this record. It’s a song that carries a powerful message that people are all the same the whole world over in that we are all looking for the same things in life. Like love, happiness, freedom, salvation etc.

Since his debut album ‘This Is The Movie’ back in 1999, Ben has reinvented himself from album to album, influenced by different styles of music over the years. As one critic saying,  “He’s not afraid to throw in some in folk, soul, reggae vibes, which in turn call to mind John Hiatt at his best.” Another describing it as somewhere in the middle ground between rock and jazz or a sound that is sometimes reminiscent of Dylan and the Band. In a solo career which now spans 20 years receiving critical acclaim from radio and press from around the world with numerous high profile TV & Radio appearances like BBC, RTE and Dutch NPO radio, supporting names like Jools Holland, Alabama 3, The Cranberries and has collaborated musically with such names as Hal Ketchum, The Blockheads and co wrote and performed with some of Nashville’s finest like David Olney & Irene Kelley.

Ben was selected to play an official showcase at Folk Alliance in Memphis Tennessee & has toured as double bill with Tommy Womack (Nashville) in the U.S and UK, and also with legendary American folk singer/songwriter Eric Andersen in the UK and Netherlands. While in Nashville he has been invited to play the famous Bluebird Cafe on a number of occasions, most recently September 2018.

Over the last 10 years Ben has enjoyed successful tours in Ireland, UK, Europe and U.S.A, receiving rave reviews and attracting a growing loyal fan base. The band have graced big festivals such as Jamming@Hippie Jacks (USA), Musiktan Festival in Bilbao, (ESP). Haarlem Jazz & Huntenpop (NL), Robin Hood folk festival (UK), Kilkenny Rhythm & Roots, Cork Jazz and Electric Picnic (EIRE).

2019 has been an exciting year so far with a new album recorded in Nashville with Will Kimborough and Tommy Womack producing ,and E Street Band member Garry Tallent playing bass on the new record which will be due out early 2020. Watch this space.

Autre Monde Share New Video

4- piece band from Dublin, Autre Monde, release a new video for their recent track ‘Fever In May’ on Strange Brew Records.

Written and directed By Gary Sheridan & Eoghan O’Brien, shot & edited by Gary Sheridan and choreography by Sundara O’Higgins & Eoghan O’Brien.

The band comprising of Paddy Hanna, Padraig Cooney, Eoghan O’ Brien and Mark Chester, are a relatively new collaboration, having formed in 2017, consisting of distinguished writers and record-makers who have attained cult followings as members of the Popical Island collective and acclaimed acts like Ginnels, Land Lovers, Skelocrats, No Monster Club and, indeed, Paddy Hanna. The Dublin quartet have established themselves as a band who traverse the boundaries of art-rock, electro-pop and post-punk.

‘Fever in May’ was the first song written for the album with Cooney describing it as “wire-y post-punk inflected with the kind pop-proginess that ELO were doing on their album ‘Time’.“

Cooney explains that “The song is about how inherited wealth and status which clings on long after anyone knows where it came from. We skip through the imagined pathetic contemporary worlds of Stuarts, a descendant of the Duc d’Orelans and some kind of 20th-century scion to paint the picture.”

In 2017, they produced an initial salvo of 4 singles and an EP, including the feted ‘Village Of Loomers’ (#6 on The Thin Air’s Best Songs of 2017) and ‘New Recruit’ (#20 on Nialler9’s Irish Songs of 2017).

RUNAH Releases Debut Album

RUNAH has just released her debut album ‘S T R A N G E’, “A subtly soulful sonic trip”.

‘S T R A N G E’  has gained over 30,000 streams in less than a month after being featured on Spotify’s ‘Deep Dark Indie’ playlist.

From the garden in the beginning to the smoke of strife and war, the twisting sound of ‘Strange’ by RUNAH stands naked but for sword and helmet, like Bellona.

Vibrating waves rise and crash within warm low rhythm. Delicious instruments of torture engage the soul, the blood and bones. And like bells ring, beauty rings and swells wonderfully from song to song.

In this magic, if we stay, if we rest, who sits beside to listen like King David at his harp? Can we know devotion? Then all erupts, the splitting tones creeping into our shadows. We are lifted and cast into deeper waters, to die before we live eternally, breathing all the world at once, with RUNAH.

Having been a part of the global Sofar Sounds series and played in various cities internationally, RUNAH has collaborated with other artists, most recently Florida based producer FKNSYD on her recent 2018 EP ‘Calcify’. Other international collaborations have included ‘Neighbourhoods Pt. 2’ with Australian six-piece Fairchild, Melbourne based artist Calan-Mai, a recent support slot for London based duo Empathy Test and recently supported, Wolf & Moon from Berlin.

RUNAH’s debut EP ‘We Only Go To Church in Winter’, produced in her Manchester flat, was supported by Clash magazine, REMY, Analogue Trash, Too Many Blogs and many more.

RUNAH’s second EP ‘Ghosts’ was released in October 2018, and was recorded/produced with David Virgin, Rohan Healy and Al Quiff at Beardfire Studio, Dublin; a father and sons production team who, in their collective six decades of musical experience, have worked – on stage or in studio – with the likes of Nick Cave, INXS, Leslie Dowdall (In Tua Nua), Mary Black, The Cruel Sea, Cat Power, Billy Bragg and Lloyd Cole, to name but a few.

Paradox Share New Single ‘Here Comes the Pain’

Cork based alternative rockers Paradox return with a heavier sound for their new single ‘Here Comes The Pain’. Recorded by Brian Casey at Wavefield Recording Studios, West Cork with Kieran O’Neill on drums for the track. The single sees Paradox returning to a more old school heavier sound than the bands previous single ‘All Life Matters’ which was also recorded at Wavefield Recording Studios.

Single artwork by Jota Gambuzino. Paradox launched the new single on May 25th with a live launch in Cork followed by a performance on the main stage at this years Vantastival Festival. Paradox play DeBarra’s Folk Club in Clonakilty, West Cork on June 21st with further shows planned for the summer.

Paradox were formed in 1997 by brothers Pete Mac and Mike Mac. The early Paradox sound was heavily influenced by the Grunge Era of the 90’s. Paradox have released 4 studio albums to date. Their debut album ‘Circle of Growth’ was recorded in Los Angeles in 2000 and released on a US label.

Their second album ‘Sacred’ was recorded and released in 2004, ‘Corporate Pollution’ was released in 2011 and their latest album ‘Chapters’ released in 2015. Singer and songwriter Pete Mac also recorded and released a solo album in 2009 in Berlin, Germany.

‘Corporate Pollution’ marked a further evolution in the Paradox sound and received the most attention from any of the bands releases. From the opening track ‘Corporate Pollution’ with it’s churning guitar riffs and political sneers the track seems to somewhat set the tone for the rest of the album. One reviewer noted that the album had, “so many influences it’s hard to list them all, the music is solid, timeless and to the point.”

Another review from Loud-Stuff.com added – “Maybe the ultimate compliment you can pay to this album is that you could listen to it between Nirvana’s ‘In Utero’ and Alice in Chains ‘Dirt’ and it’s every bit as good.

‘Mr. Bureaucracy’ was chosen to be the first single with it’s fast pulsing riffs and melodic vocal refrains. The band also shot a music video for ‘Mr. Bureaucracy’ in 2012 which was nominated for best song at the Berlin Music Video Awards, Dublin International short film and music awards the Portobello Film Festival London in 2013. https://youtu.be/QUVxYKrKULQ

In 2012 the ‘Corporate Pollution’ track ‘Repress Excess’ was used on the soundtrack for Canadian horror movie ‘Truth’ which screened at the Cannes Film Festival and won the Canada International Film Festival’s Royal Reel Award.

Paradox have toured both Europe and the US as well as playing support to the likes of Therapy?, Kerbdog and Shonen Knife.

2014 saw Paradox back in the studio recording their 4th album to date at Wavefield Recording Studios in Bantry, West Cork with multi tasking musician and engineer Brian Casey on the desk.

Titled ‘Chapters’ the 14 track album combines a variety of new sounds some of which have not yet been heard on any previous Paradox album. ‘Chapters’ has been gaining momentum since it’s release in 2015. The band kicked off 2016 with a new single and music video titled ‘EAT’ which was nominated at the Indie Cork Film Festival and the RATMA Film Festival in the UK.

2017 saw the release of the new single ‘All Life Matters’, an eagerly awaited follow up to the bands last album ‘Chapters’. ‘All Life Matters’ takes a similar direction to the previous Paradox album ‘Chapters’ which was also recorded at Wavefield with the track criticizing the current political climate. Singer Songwriter Pete Mac plays all instruments on the track with Brian Casey adding keys and piano. A music video for the track was released in 2018.

The video takes a sarcastic twisted view on social media and how today’s society is influenced by information received through this form of media. The video won ‘Best Music Video’ at the Disappear Here Film Festival in Donegal and was nominated at the Kerry Film Festival and the Indie Cork Film Festival 2018.

A follow up single titled ‘Here Comes The Pain’ was released in May 2019 with the band making a return to a more heavier sound. More new music is planned to be released this year.

Ordnance Survey Launch ‘Relative Phase’

Note Productions are delighted to present the launch of ‘Relative Phase’, the new work from Ordnance Survey.

Composer Neil O’Connor has been producing electronic music for the past 21 years under a number of guises (most notably Somadrone), where he has been compared to the likes of Brian Eno and Ryuichi  Sakamoto.

‘Relative Phase’ sees O’Connor develop a heightened sense of control and restraint in his work. Spatial data is all around us; it helps us shape a more functional world. To map a space, gives us better ordnance.

The album attempts to ‘map’ the worlds of new music, jazz and electro-acoustic music and features a survey of collaborations from his contemporaries such as Sean Mc Erlaine, Linda Buckley, Kate Ellis and John McEntire (Tortoise).

The launch takes place on Friday 7th June in The Fumbally with special guest David Kitt (solo electronics set).

The Coronas Share ‘Find The Water’ Video

The Coronas release their new video for ‘Find The Water’, the first single to be taken from their upcoming album which they are currently recording. The album, the sixth from the band, is being produced by industry legend Rob Kirwan (Hozier, PJ Harvey, U2, Depeche Mode) and is due to be released in spring 2020.

The Coronas have teamed up with long-time collaborator John Broe who directed videos for ‘Give Me A Minute’, ‘Real Feel’ and We Couldn’t Fake It’ from their last release. “John sent us the treatment on a Wednesday afternoon last month, we booked the flights that evening and flew to LA that Saturday,” explains Danny.

I think the rest of the band especially loved the idea because they weren’t in it! They got the week off! Although they were a little jealous when they heard the location was LA!

We kept the shoot very organic – rented the truck, drove out to the desert and just shot for 3 days. The light was incredible out there and some of locations we stumbled across were just perfect for the feel that John wanted.

Musically, ‘Find the Water’ is unlike anything we’ve done before,” says lead singer Danny O’Reilly. “Melodically, the vocal delivery, even the arrangement is unusual for us – but yet it was one of those songs where we were all on the same page right from the start and it came together very quickly, which is always a good sign. The song is about self-improvement, both personally and on the band’s journey. A reminder to myself to appreciate what I’ve got and to convince myself that I can write a decent song or be a good friend or be a better person or whatever it may be.”

The last two summers have seen The Coronas play some of their biggest shows in their hometown, Dublin, including a sold out 3Arena and playing to 15,000 fans at the Royal Hospital Kilmainham. The band were amazed with how many fans travelled to these gigs from all over the country, so this year they decided it’s their turn to do the travelling and they’re taking the show on the road in the form of ‘The Long Way Home Festival’.

Each festival show will have support from some of The Coronas’ favourite up-and-coming acts followed by a full Coronas show in which they’ll showcase some songs from the new album as well as their beloved back catalogue. “As much we love touring abroad, there’s a special place in our hearts for Irish audiences and the we’re so excited to bring The Long Way Home festival around the country this summer.

See The Coronas live this Summer;

22 June                   Independent Park, Cork with Sigrid and All Tvvins
28 July                    Galway Arts Festival with Le Boom, Ryan McMullan, True Tides, and The Clockworks
