Dervish to Receive Lifetime Achievement Award

Traditional Irish band Dervish will be honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award at this year’s BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards 2019 for their incredible contribution to folk music.

Dervish have been bringing Irish traditional music to the world for 30 years, and have played at festivals across the globe – from Rock in Rio to Glastonbury.

Shane Mitchell from Dervish said: “We are thrilled and so delighted to be receiving this very special honour at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, particularly as this is the 30th anniversary of the band.”

What an incredible year it’s been so far for Dervish.

To celebrate turning 30 this year, Irish Folk Icons Dervish released their New Album ‘The Great Irish Songbook’ (Rounder).   The album is a fitting tribute to Dervish’s 30 years in the business and features Dervish performing with over a dozen luminaries across an eclectic range of genres including Imelda May, Brendan Gleeson, Steve Earle, Andrea Corr, David Gray, Vince Gill, Rhiannon Giddens, Kate Rusby, Abigail Washburn and others.  The Album went straight to No.1 on the Amazon Folk Charts and No.16 on the US iTunes Album Charts on its Release.

A quote from U2’s The Edge features on this very special album:  “It’s great to hear these classic Irish Folk songs given a 21st Century treatment. It sounds like they’ll be hits for another century at least!”

The Great Irish Songbook Special Concert with Dervish featuring Special Guests Imelda May, David Gray, Kate Rusby and actor Brendan Gleeson will take place at The London Palladium on Thursday, 19th September 2019.

It all started 30 years ago in one of Ireland’s Oldest pubs in Sligo ‘Shoot The Crows'(the pub itself is 150 years old)! ‘Shoot The Crows’ runs one of the longest running Trad sessions in Ireland and it’s where Dervish was formed 30 years ago.

Dervish was given a Special Reception by the Cathaoirleach of Sligo County Council to mark the band’s 30 years performing.  It was hosted by Cathaoirleach Cllr Martin Baker at Sligo County Hall.

A highlight of the folk music calendar, the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards celebrates the thriving folk music scene and serves to raise the profile of this much loved musical genre. The event showcases and celebrates the best folk, roots and acoustic music and features live performances by the very best acts including legendary Irish group Dervish. Now in its 20th year, this year’s ceremony, will take place at the Bridgewater Hall, Manchester on Wednesday 16th October 2019.

The awards are presented by folk fans that in the past have included, Sir David Attenborough, Sean Bean, Jarvis Cocker, Phil Collins, Roger Daltrey, Ray Davies, Peter Gabriel and Sharleen Spiteri.

The show, which will be broadcast live from 7-9pm on BBC Radio 2 and on BBC Sounds, will be produced by 7digital.

lullahugh Releases ‘Elysium’

lullahush is the musical moniker of producer Daniel McIntyre, who participated in the Red Bull Music Academy last year in Berlin.

It’s been an impressive year for lullahush, with a coveted place on the RBMA programme in Funkhaus Berlin, followed by signing a global publishing deal with BDi and being invited to create his first ever A/V installation at the Red Bull Free Gaff event in Dublin. He’s already an in demand producer here in Ireland, working on tracks for fellow rising artists ELKIN and Bad Bones as well as his integral part in theÆ MAK project. This is the second release from his forthcoming project ‘A City Made of Water and Small Love’.

August 2nd saw the release of ‘Elysium’, a sonically captivating electronic track made with his unique blend of glitch and realism, sparkling tones and late night crooning. Inspired by the loss of a friend and a fear of growing up, Elysium is a slow burn journey suffused with anxiety and tension that lands on a note of strange joy.

“I started writing this song when I was 17 and afraid of becoming a ‘hopeless twenty-something’. It grew up with me and became about the people you lose and the places you can’t get back to, but also about the people you stay with and the places you never stop going” – lullahush

Screaming Orphan Announce New Single

Genre breaking Donegal band Screaming Orphans release their summer single ‘Shine’ on 9th August, taken from their latest album ‘Life in a Carnival’, which was released back in March and is the fourteenth album from the band.  ‘Life in a Carnival’ reached No. 24 in the iTunes Pop Music charts (U.S.), No. 7 in the Billboard World Albums charts, No. 1 in the iTunes Singer/Songwriter charts (IE), and No. 3 in the overall iTunes music charts (IE).

‘Shine’ is a heartfelt ballad of self-empowerment, about trying to live in the light even when you’re feeling low. It features a poignant piano melody, with the group’s trademark intricate harmonies taking the spotlight. The theme of the song is beautifully illustrated by the video, directed by filmmaker Vasco Mendes and starring Svenja Tiger, a textile artist and performer based in Porto. For ‘Shine’ Svenja has created a hypnotic routine using a neon hula-hoop which she performs in day and night-time, using a beachscape as her backdrop. The video for ‘Shine’ has been shortlisted in the 10th Underground Cinema Short Film Awards and it’s screening will take place in Dun Laoghaire on August 15th.

Screaming Orphans are the four Diver sisters – Joan, Angela, Gráinne and Marie Thérèse – hailing from Bundoran in Donegal. From an early age the Divers performed with their mother Kathleen Fitzgerald, a well-known céilí singer, playing shows in Ireland, England and Germany. When the band hit their teenage years, they formed Screaming Orphans. In 1997 they received their big break when Sinead O’Connor asked them to open for her on her Gospel Oak tour, which lead to gigs in Europe, America and Canada and appearances on the David Letterman show amongst numerous others. Since then they have topped the iTunes World Music Charts, recorded with The Chieftains and Peter Gabriel, and toured globally.

Through extensive touring and genuine fan engagement, Screaming Orphans has built up a devoted fanbase in Ireland and America, both of which are home for the four sisters. They tour regularly throughout North America and Europe and even sometimes bring their fans on tour! Called the Cultural Fan Tour, the latest one happened in April 2019. Screaming Orphans toured with a select group of fans, took them sightseeing and introduced them to other musicians, all the while gigging in venues around Ireland.

Screaming Orphans are busy throughout the autumn and winter playing all over the USA, including gigs at the Iowa Irish Festival, Worldfest in Kentucky, Ohio Celtic Festival, Appaloosa Festival Virginia and Florida Keys Celtic Festival. Their next gig in Ireland is at Temple Bar Tradfest in Dublin on 22nd January 2020, sure to be sold-out soon when their avid Irish fans hear about it!

Dubh Lee Gets Stiffed in Her Debut Single Music Video

Dubh Lee’s debut single ‘Virtue’ and the accompanying music video is now available on all platforms.

Dubh Lee could be the love-child of Leonard Cohen and Janis Joplin. Her music unites Cohen’s folk sensitivity and lyrical prowess with the raw, sexual power of Joplin’s bluesrock energy. Since starting gigging in Summer 2018 she has entertained audiences across Ireland at events such as Electric Picnic and the Ruby Sessions with the winning combination of her honest stage persona and slick guitar playing.

Her debut single ‘Virtue’ is a folk-infused pop song that details the mental battle between love for another person and one’s self-respect, and examines the doubts that arise from waiting for an absent lover to come around. Its release will be coupled with a spectacular music video shot in the Slieve Bloom mountains, which tells the story of the unfortunate Dubh and her stiff, unresponsive lover.

Dubh Lee will be performing at the Ruby Sessions on 6th August 2019. Further announcements of her upcoming gigs can be found on her Facebook page.
