Pitch Perfect: Write It! STF Workshop 3: Writing about Music for the Public, 18 Oct 2019

‘Writing about music is like dancing about architecture’ is a quip attributed to various individuals from Elvis Costello to Frank Zappa. Whatever its origins, there is no disputing the huge public interest in the work of those who endeavour to talk and write about music.

Reviews, articles, blogs, and podcasts are some of the ways in which writers connect with listeners and readers, fans and scholars. But how do you go about producing that content? What music do you want to write about? How do you convey sonic experiences in print? Which forms of communication will enable you to reach your desired audience?

To help address these questions, Sounding the Feminists has just announced STF Workshop 3! Writing about Music for the Public, a FREE workshop, which takes place at IMRO from 4 – 7pm on Friday, 18 October 2019.

Facilitated by Laura Watson of STF, the workshop features a panel of experts who write, edit and produce content for diverse audiences. Their work spans the spectrum of print media, academia, online media platforms, podcasts, radio, the blogosphere, and more. They are:

Brian McGrane releases ‘Take Your Time’

Having toured the world extensively with many of Irelands leading artists in venues such as Dublins’ 3 Arena, Radio City New York and The Sydney Opera House, Brian has just played two sold out headline shows on August 9th & 10TH in the Asgard Theatre in Arklow, Co.Wicklow. Having consistently released a new single every 8 weeks & with over 80,000 streams on Spotify this year alone, he has had an extremely exciting year of gigs and creativity. “Sometimes things don’t always go to plan but I get back on my feet and always try to better myself”

“Take Your Time”, was released on Friday September 6th along with a powerful yet and simple music video which has been getting lots of attention on social media.

The song reflects on the pressures of relationships in a modern world. With so many opportunities to travel, change careers and meet new people, existing relationships can sometimes get a little unsteady. Seeing past these obstacles, staying calm and “Taking Your Time”, gives us the best chance in modern society

Brian wrote & produced the song at his home studio in Navan Co. Meath and left the mixing in the capable hands Malahide based producer Billy Farrell. Coming into the autumn, Brian is planning to launch his 2nd EP of the year and has just announced that he will perform at this years’ “Kinsale Shark Awards festival” the international festival for creativity. Constantly gigging in smaller venues around the country to connect with new audiences, Brian has the bones of his first album written and will do a full album launch in Spring 2020.

The IMRO sponsored beatvyne’s Music x Tech Experience has announced its list of Showcasing Artists from across Europe to perform at the 2019 event in Dublin this October 10-12. This curated line-up of the best emerging artists will play on multiple stages at the official Launch Party at the iconic Windmill Lane Recording Studios on October 10, as well as the MxT ‘Hive Stage’ on October 11 and 12 respectively for industry professionals from the entertainment and tech industries, international media and music fans.

Moncrieff Follows “Ghost” With New Single “Like I Do”

Every once in a while, a pop artist emerges with the whole package; talent, experienced songwriting, organic and raw vocals and true feeling.

Having already received strong airplay from BBC Radio 1, BBC 6 Music, and Beats 1, along with a 13 week stint on the European Border Breakers Chart with his first two opening singles, Moncrieff seems now set to be the next Irish artist to break through with the release of his first body of work ‘The Early Hurts’ EP due later this year.

Today, Moncrieff releases new single ‘Like I Do’. The perfect musical recipe of strong, soulful vocal delivery, raw yet hard-hitting production, ‘Like I Do’ is the focus single of Moncrieff’s upcoming EP ‘The Early Hurts’ and follows single ‘Ghost’. 

As the young Irish talent explains about the track: “Like I Do tells the story of a break up with an ex-partner with brutal honesty and sincerity. It always feels promising and a relief to have that moment of clarity about love,  Like I Do is turning up at your exes door far too late and trying to win them back out of the hands of their new lover. Sometimes break up songs have a habit of being told with images and metaphors to help round off the edges and soften the blow a bit for the other person, but most of the time in real life it doesn’t work this way… in my experience and I’m sure in many others, when you break up, there’s tears, grit and angry words… there’s bitterness as well as care and love that hovers around and that’s what “Like I Do” captures: real feelings, bad times.“

Melodic new pop single ‘Ghosts’ from ELLYD

ELLYD returns after a busy summer with her new melodic pop offering ‘Ghosts’.

Following on from her successful upbeat single ‘With the World’, which reached number 6 in the iTunes charts, the Dublin native returns with this gentle singalong tune that gradually builds during its lyrical journey.

As well as releasing ‘Ghosts’ on Friday, September 27, ELLYD will also be kick-starting her Irish tour the following night on the 28th at Crane Lane in Cork. Following this, October will see Elly playing several dates around the country, including some with her newly formed backing band.

Speaking about the new single and her upcoming tour ELLYD said: “Ghosts is a song I think people will be able to relate to in some way or another. It is a little dark at the beginning but finds the light towards the end.”

She added: “I’m looking forward to getting back out on the road to play new places and see new faces. 

“I’ll be joined by my backing band for a couple of shows and i’ll be doing some intimate solo gigs too, a good mix, I can’t wait.”

ELLYD (Elaine Doyle), who hails from West Dublin, has toured throughout Ireland and Europe and has played some of the biggest festivals and venues including Electric Picnic, Indiependence, The Dublin Quays Festival, Battle of the Lakes, The Ruby Sessions , Vicar Street, Whelan’s(One’s to Watch 2019) and The Button Factory. She has also supported some amazing bands and singers in recent months including Aslan, the Riptide Movement and Australian singer Olympia.

Special Guest Marc Ribot joins Sam Amidon’s Extended Ensemble at Tradition Now

Marc Ribot joins Sam Amidon at Tradition Now for a special performance which will explore the relationship between traditional music and jazz. Ribot is best-known for his work with Waits but his talents have been in demand from a host of other luminaries over the years including Elvis Costello, John Zorn, Wilson Pickett, Chuck Berry, Marianne Faithfull, Robert Plant and Alison Krauss and many more.

Marc is widely credited with helping Waits define a new musical direction on Rain Dogs (1985) and their work together continued on Franks Wild Years (1987), Big Time (1988), Mule Variation (1999), Real Gone (2004), Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers & Bastards (2006) and Bad As Me (2011).

Another heavyweight with whom he is closely associated is Elvis Costello – his skills can be heard on revered long-players Spike (1989), Mighty Like A Rose (1991) and Kojak Variety (1995).

Marc has released 25 albums under his own name over a 40-year career, exploring a dizzying array of genres. He has also composed and contributed to numerous soundtracks including Martin Scorsese’s The Departed, Spike Jonze’s Where The Wild Things Are, Johnny Cash biopic Walk The Line and Liev Schreiber’s Everything is Illuminated.

2018 saw the release of two politically charged albums: YRU Still Here? – the long awaited third album from Ribot’s post-rock/noise trio Ceramic Dog – and Songs of Resistance 1942-2018 (featuring guest vocalists Tom Waits, Steve Earle and Sam Amidon).

He reunites with Sam for this special Tradition Now show on October 6 exploring the hidden connections between trad and jazz. In the second part of the evening revered concertina player Niall Valley presents his Sounds Like Freedom project with New York power Jazz trio Harriet Tubman, which explores the links between Irish and US civil rights struggles. 24th Sligo Festival of Baroque Music, 2019 | Festival Line-up Announced

Taking place on the weekend of 27-29 September 2019, the IMRO sponsored 24th Sligo Festival of Baroque Music, is set to offer a rich variety of beautiful baroque music, with authentic performances from players and singers from home and abroad.

Each year the festival draws a large local audience as well as visitors to Sligo attracted by the quality of the music and the friendly, informal atmosphere. Participating venues include The Model and Calry Church, both located on The Mall.

The renowned ensemble Collegium Marianum from Prague, who delighted the Festival audience in 2014, return to play three concerts this year, ranging from Bach on Friday, to 17th century virtuoso showpieces on Saturday, and concluding on Sunday with masterpieces for flute by Vivaldi and Czech composers. Other concerts will feature an ensemble of young musicians from the RIAM in Dublin, Nina Treadwell and Sarah Groser playing lyrical duets for strings, and the Sligo Baroque Orchestra, led by Nicola Cleary, in an adventurous programme of rarely heard works – including one with Leonard Barry on uilleann pipes.

Nurturing the musical development of young performers has always been a key theme of the Festival. This year, visiting players of Collegium Marianum will give masterclasses in baroque performance on flute, violin and cello, and an event for schools will introduce students to the world of baroque music.

The late concert on Saturday at 10pm is always a favourite with the festival audience. The music and the mood are nocturnal, gentle and reflective. Appropriate to the hour, Colin Booth, the well-known English harpsichord player, maker and scholar, will play dark, expressive pieces from 17th century France, by Louis Couperin, d’Anglebert and others.

Sons of Burlap to release a brand new double A side ahead of their debut album

Sons of Burlap are set to release a brand new double A side with singles Blood Margaret and Caravan ahead of their debut album, “Dance of Pholcus” which is due for release on Friday, 13th September. 

Perhaps Sons of Burlap could seem, at first glance, a rather unlikely troop. Their music is, not unlike the musicians themselves, a mixture of pretty old and relatively new. They combine traditional instruments, fiddle, flute, mandolins, with overdriven electric guitar – while the crashing drums and thumping bass are the sheepdogs that keep the flock together. Noisy folk music with influences from eastern Europe and beyond sort of describe what you are about to hear but cannot prepare you for the blast of energy that is difficult not to dance to. 

In a sense the band was formed in 1970s Bangor Co Down. Julian, Philip, Nano and the sorely missed Bart Lyons would get together for impromptu sessions and jams for years. In pubs, living rooms and barn dances across Ireland the group gradually stumbled upon some of that eastern influence that forms the song writing bedrock of “Dance of Pholcus”. 

In 2012 a punk rock spirit was added to that bedrock with Julian’s sons Ewen (CATALAN!/Axis of) and Rory (ASIWYFA) joining the party, along with ASIWYFA’s pounding rhythm section of Chris Wee and Johnny Adger. With the sad passing of Bart Lyons soon after the band established themselves in full, they started to write, record and perform with an added sense of zeal and ambition, now performing in his honour and under a name inspired by Bart (Dr Burlap himself!) This is Sons of Burlap.  

Dance of Pholcus was recorded and produced by Rory Friers in ASIWYFA’s studio in Belfast. The double A side with singles Caravan and Blood Margaret will be released this Friday, 06th September. The debut album will be released on Friday, 13th September ahead of Sons of Burlap’s debut album launch on Saturday, 14th September at The Ulster Sports Club. Tickets on sale now.

Great Lakes International Film Festival Selection for Independent Open Mic Documentary

“Open Mic Dublin – The Movie” has been selected for a screening at the Great Lakes International Film Festival 2019. Showcasing the best films of the season, the Great Lakes International Film Festival will be held LIVE in Erie, Pennsylvania, starting on September 19th. This is the second festival screening this year for these new film makers after a screening on February 9th at the Irish Film Festival New Jersey. This film is becoming a popular choice with American judges.

This feature length documentary is the result of a two-year comprehensive examination of the artists and hosts of the scene in Dublin. It also includes an interview with the man who started the first open mic in Dublin, ran open mics for 25 years, and who influenced the development of successful artists like Gemma Hayes, Damien Dempsey, Luka Bloom, Glen Hansard and many more.

Open mic hosts Alan Morton and Conor Clancy, of the Jailbreak Sessions in the Patriot Inn Kilmainham, have created what could be the feel-good movie of the year. The whole film is awash with superb music and poetry, captured live and in the raw and has wild stories of the extraordinary things people have seen at open mics.

A bonus of these festival selections is that the artists featured in the film are being introduced to American audiences and through that they are adding to the charm and allure of Ireland as a cultural destination. It also brings attention to a phenomenal part of Dublin’s nightlife, rarely spoken about, but infinitely praiseworthy.

Bluefire Street Fest Announces Programme Line-up

The programme for the 7th annual BLUEFIRE STREET FEST has been announced. The one-day, all ages festival will take place on Saturday 21st September in Smithfield Square, Dublin.  All events are free to the public – booking is required for some.  Most events are suitable for all ages but there are some restrictions – see website for details https://www.bluefiredublin.ie/   

BlueFire is proud to be the first Irish organisation to launch a MUSIC DECLARES EMERGENCY stage with live music on Smithfield Square from Munky, Outsider Yp, Shakalak & more.  ‘LIFE’S TOO SHORT FOR SMALL TALK’ will discuss hot button topics including ‘Irish Media | Misrepresenting The Irish’ and ‘Hypersexualisation Of Women’.  ARTIVISM| ART ON A MISSION will be led by noted Artivists Will St Leger and Emily Robyn Archer.  A new addition for 2019 is HEALTH AND HARMONY, a global therapies fair including Children’s Yoga Workshop.  Feast on food from around the globe at GLOBAL VILLAGE and admire jewellery and art from far flung destinations.  DUBLIN YOUTH DANCE COMPANY will perform a choreographed piece while at the DANCE PLAZA all age groups can enjoy fun dance moves including Bollywood Beats for Kids and Capoeira. Stunning STREET ART OPERA will light up the sky in Smithfield, projected onto Jameson Tower accompanied by a magical operatic soundtrack.  WORKSHOP TENT will feature an array of classes packed with creativity and fun activities from arts & crafts to writing, head dress wrapping and screen printing.

BlueFire Street Fest will open at 11am with a Peace Ceremony including ‘Midday Global Minute of Silence’ led by the Lord Mayor of Dublin Paul McAuliffe with Naoimh McNamee, CEO of Glencree Peace and Reconciliation Centre and members of the Tibetan Buddhist Centre.  The festival coincides with International Day of Peace, whose 2019 focus is Climate Action and also with the 150th Anniversary of the birth of one of the world’s greatest peace-makers Mahatma Gandhi.  It is in honour of these significant events that the festival will embrace the theme of Peace | People + Planet throughout its programme. 

The festival has proudly partnered with the Embassy of Colombia for a special opening event for Culture Night on Sept 20th at Voodoo Lounge, 40 Arran Quay.  From 8.30pm acclaimed artist Julio Victoria and band will take fans on a sonic ride that goes from 80 to 126 bpm, merging electro rhythms with indigenous instruments. The event is free but tickets must be pre booked here.

Bluefire Street Fest is a non-profit social enterprise with a mission to promote social integration and cohesion amongst young Dubliners across all cultural backgrounds.  Now is its 7th year and with the support of its funders the Arts Council and Dublin City Council, BlueFire Street Fest has refocused its artistic vision, expanded its team and taken a bold step in the direction towards becoming a more socially responsible and ‘conscious festival’. 2019 will see the festival and its community of young change-makers embrace a wider public discourse, exploring the impacts we have upon each other and on our planet.
