Oliver Cole Shares Single and Announces Album Details

Having had some success with his first band Swampshack, Oliver Cole formed the three-piece rock band, Turn. Oliver was Turn’s singer, songwriter and main guitarist, and they soon signed to Infectious Records in London, which was home to Muse, Ash and Garbage, among others. Turn enjoyed great success and popularity, playing sell-out gigs at Vicar Street and a packed to the gills standout performance at the Oxegen festival in 2005.

They released three Irish Top 10 albums and were nominated for Ireland’s coveted Choice Music Award. Oliver left the band in 2006 to begin work on his first solo album, ‘We Albatri’, which was recorded in Germany. Upon its release, The Irish Times gave the album 5 out of 5 and made it their album of the month.

Oliver continues to progress his career as both a songwriter and solo artist, his most recent album ‘Year Of The Bird’ was released to huge critical acclaim in 2015. Oliver is a well-respected songwriter and continues to collaborate and tour with some of Ireland’s biggest names such as Glen Hansard and Gemma Hayes to name a few.

‘You Were The Right Turn’ is the first single from his upcoming album ‘Father, Brother, Son’, set for release in late October. ‘You Were the Right Turn’ is a song about recovery and redemption, the healing that begins after the acceptance of the loss. It features Graham Hopkins (Glen Hansard, The Frames, The Cranberries), Robbie Malone (David Gray) and Colm Querney (Lir).

‘Father Brother Son’ is Oliver Cole’s third album. Unearthing themes of life and loss, birth and death, it explores the path from grief to recovery, what we have and what we leave behind.

He has also supported award-winning artist Tom Walker for an intimate performance last September.

The track will be released on Friday, September 25th and is shaping up to be his most powerful single to date. The young Irish producer & singer-songwriter has been making the most of these crazy times by collaborating online with writers from all over the world. Santiago Kodela Features on ‘Voices of Earth and Air Vol III’

‘Voices of Earth and Air Vol III’ is released 9th October featuring ‘The Gulag Within’ by Irish based composer Santiago Kodela.

‘The Gulag Within’ is my first exploration into the world of choral music.  Written for unaccompanied SATB the text was inspired by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn’s The Gulag Archipelago, arguably the book that helped bring The Soviet Union down to its knees.  The composition works around a series of tonalities, major and minor modulations, and the frequent shifting of the main protagonist between the voices.  The text invokes the listener to stand and face the inequalities and injustices of life with courage and valour. To accept the everyday tragedies and confront them with strength and bravery.

‘The Gulag Within’ is coming out Oct. 9th on ‘Voices of Earth and Air, Vol. III, a multi-composer album to be released by GRAMMY nominated North-American label PARMA RECORDINGS / Navona Records.

GAMA BOMB Announce New Album for December Release

Having inked a deal with Los Angeles based Prosthetic Records, Irish thrashers, GAMA BOMB, return with a nautical-themed album that will surely be the soundtrack to the final months of 2020 for old school metal-lovers the globe over. ‘Sea Savage’ will be released via Prosthetic Records on December 4; a single of the same name will be released digitally tomorrow with an accompanying video available to view immediately. Pre-orders are live now for ‘Sea Savage’ here.

‘Sea Savage’ was shot on location at Fanad Head Lighthouse in County Donegal, with the permission of the Irish Lights Authority who maintain the working 19th century lighthouse, as well as in Newry, Northern Ireland and Omeath, County Louth, in September 2020. Set in 1900 and filmed in a real, working lighthouse, the epic, monochrome ‘silent film’ is the band’s most ambitious video yet.

Over the past year, we’ve been obsessed with stories about the sea,” explains singer Philly Byrne. “Moby Dick, the mystery of the Franklin Expedition, the maritime stories of William Hope Hodgson and Poe, and movies like The Lighthouse – these things all came together to inspire the song, the album and the video for ‘Sea Savage’. It’s almost like fate – it was inevitable.

The ‘Sea Savage’ video is our love letter to silent movies, and hopefully a way to finally rid ourselves of this fixation we’ve got with the ocean.”

In this video we find our intrepid heroes trapped in a 19th century lighthouse, their cognitive function blocked by foraged bottles of grog,” explains bassist Joe McGuigan. “Who will tend the wick as each fellow faces his uncertain end?

It also debuts our mascot Snowy’s new look – he’s had a bit of a makeover for the new album, and has grown up a lot,” says Philly. “With touring off the cards for now, it’s more important than ever for fans to have something to watch and enjoy – hopefully we’re giving them that, and then some.”

Inspired by Victorian horror and maritime adventures such as Moby Dick, the new album is presented as a 19th Century play, with Act One and Act Two playing out on side A and side B of the record respectively. The pelagic tale follows the crew of the steamer ‘S.S. Gama Bomb’ as they voyage in search of a real-life Yeti, only to go slowly mad on the high seas. It also features songs about 80s and 90s movies, because GAMA BOMB cannot help themselves.

‘Sea Savage’ was produced by the band’s own lead guitarist Domo Dixon, with the band members recording remotely in Dublin and Newry, Ireland, as well as London and Warsaw throughout spring and summer 2020. The album was then mixed and mastered by Zack Ohren (Testament, Carcass) in California, using analog ‘80s equipment to match the old-school metal vibe. The album is the band’s first since the departure of longtime drummer Paul Caffrey, seeing James Stewart (Vader, Decapitated) taking up the sticks and delivering a devastating performance, adding a technical ‘death-y’ edge to GAMA BOMB’s sound.

Inspired by the attitude and speed of classic Judas Priest, Iron Maiden and Accept rather than worshipping at the altar of old-school thrash, ‘Sea Savage’ is a very different beast from their previous albums. GAMA BOMB have taken stylistic leaps with ‘Sea Savage’, which features both their slowest and their fastest song to date, and forays into classic metal and hard rock led by Philly Byrne’s gruff falsetto.

Stano – ‘Anthology’ Out Now in Celebration of Record Store Day

Irish artist Stano has been a recording artist and composer since the early ’80s. With 9 albums (released on Berlin label ‘Dossier’, Independent labels ‘Hue’ and ‘Loscann’ and the debut album for U2’s Mother Records), numerous singles and film soundtracks to his credit. He is regarded as a true innovator, with an intense understanding of sonic structure.

Stano has always been known for pushing boundaries and being ahead of his time. The re-release by Dublin’s All City Records in October 2018 of his debut album ‘Content To Write In I Dine Weathercraft’ (1983) really brought this to the fore, with UK publications Quietus Magazine, Boomkat, and DJ Magazine, shining a light on Stano’s influence citing the current crop of new Irish bands Fontaines DC, Girl Band, Murder Capital.

Following on from All City’s 2018 repress of Stano’s debut album, the store’s off-shoot label, AllChival, is delighted to present an Anthology of Stano’s productions spanning the start of his solo career in 1982, to his 1994 ‘Wreckage’ LP, out now ahead of Record Store Day, September 26th. Featuring 18 tracks from the five LPs he released in that time span on double vinyl with extensive liner notes, it is a comprehensive look at one of Ireland’s more enigmatic musical characters.

Stano says: “When I’m recording an album I’m totally focused on it and when it’s finished I don’t really think about it anymore, my focus turns to the next one.

The anthology has encouraged me to look back at not just the body of work, 15 albums since 1982 but to those early days of being a young punk in Dublin, the freedom and excitement of the time. Searching out the old reviews and the posters of all the gigs here and in London and remembering the great musicians and performance artists I’ve shared a stage with.  Truly exciting times.

It’s been an amazing experience and a surprise to me that we could only fit 1982 – 94 on the double vinyl. I suppose I’ve underestimated the quantity of work I’ve produced over the years.  Now I’m really looking forward to Volume 2 which will include tracks from number 16 which is being cooked in the studio at the moment.”

This anthology shows the depth and breadth of Stano’s musical history. He never repeats himself from album to album or song to song. Always an outsider, his significance and influence are finally getting the recognition he so justly deserves. Because his music was never part of any scene, it remains timeless.

Stano – ‘Anthology’ is released on Allchival for Record Store Day, September 26th, 2020, via AllChival – a dedicated reissue label of Irish sounds from the past, which has previously released compilations of Irish jazz, disco & rock as well as LP’s from Roger Doyle’s Operating Theatre, Michael O’Shea & Cork’s Five Go Down To The Sea.

SON Shares The Rolling Stones Cover

One of Ireland’s brightest emerging talents, SON, has shared her new single, a take on the classic Rolling Stones hit ‘Gimme Shelter’.

In 1969 at the time of its release, The Rolling Stones’ ‘Gimme Shelter’ was heralded as a masterpiece that evoked the true sense of apocalyptic anxiety that loomed in the time of the Vietnam War, Civil unrest and societal violence around the world. SON (aka Susan O’ Neill)’s commanding cover of the song now in 2020 certainly summons a similar feeling of unease but with a sparser arrangement that allows the haunting lyrics and Susan’s astonishing vocals to take centre stage.

SON gives a sobering rendition, here, the opening line “ooh the storm is threatening” feels chillingly topical.

The artist says:

“I decided to take a new approach to a song that I love. It was cool to slow down the words and explore the sounds in a very personal way, sitting in them for a while, and trying on a new feeling.”

‘Gimme Shelter’ is SON’s first follow up to this past February’s release of her duet, ‘Baby Talk‘ with acclaimed singer-songwriter, Mick Flannery. The overwhelming reaction to the duet, with late-night television appearances and heavy rotation on national radio playlists, set the scene for a solo release from the County Clare artist. Her powerhouse vocals are immediate, building the anticipation for more solo material to come.

Produced by Susan, alongside Irish producer and musician Simon O’Reilly, Gimme Shelter is available on all digital platforms now, 25th September 2020. Stream/Buy at http://smarturl.it/son-gimme-shelter

SON opens for Mick Flannery at The Balor Theatre, Co. Donegal, 23rd October, and will perform together with Mick at The Sligo Live festival,  debuting some of their new duet songs on Saturday 24th October; Then on to her own shows at The Royal Spa Theatre, Lisdoonvarna, Sunday 25th October (SOLD OUT); and the Theatre Royal, Waterford, Thursday 12th November, with more dates to be announced. Padraig Jack’s Debut Album Out Today

Irish singer-songwriter Padraig Jack releases his debut album ‘Making Sand’ today, 25 September. ‘Making Sand’ was recorded in London and produced by music industry legend John Reynolds (Sinéad O’Connor, Damien Dempsey, Shane McGowan). The album includes the lead single ‘Minnie’ which was released to excellent reviews both in the UK and Ireland, as well as ‘Streetbed Ridden’, the single released back in March that tackled the issue of homelessness.

The album title is taken from the track ‘Making Sand’, which is in Padraig’s view the most meaningful song on the album, as it is inspired by Padraig’s home island of Inis Mór in the Aran Islands. The island’s landscape is rugged and scattered with bronze age stone ring-forts, ancient monasteries and churches founded by saints. ‘Making Sand’ attempts to capture a sense of the awesome historical and cultural importance of the islands while acknowledging that despite all the history and current societal activity, the inhabitants of the Island are ‘just making sand out here’ and only passing through.

Padraig Jack (O Flaithearta) was born into a musical family from the Aran islands. His dad is the songwriter Barry Ronan and he is the nephew of the Irish poet and Aosdána member Mary O’Malley. A native of Inis Mór which has produced writers Liam O Flaithearta, Máirtín Ó Direáin and Breandán Ó hEithir, Padraig is proudly bilingual both as a conversationalist and a songwriter.

Padraig Jack’s songwriting heros include James Taylor, Van Morrison, Shane MacGowan, Sandy Denny, and Jimmy McCarthy. He seeks to develop his own songwriting style in the Irish language also and in this regard, takes inspiration from Enya, Kíla, John Spillane and Peadar Ó Riada.

Padraig’s lockdown was a lot more productive than most people could claim! He set up his own home music studio as well as negotiating a publishing deal with Beautiful World and Downtown Publishing whose roster includes Ryan Tedder, Joan Baez, Ray Davies and John Prine.

Padraig will be gigging in the coming months, both solo and as a guest with Damien Dempsey. For those who can’t travel to see him, Padraig will be celebrating the launch of his album with a livestream from his website on 11th October.

modernlove. Share Latest Single and Announce Dublin Headliner

Ireland’s modernlove. have announced a headline show for The Grand Social on Saturday, 5th December 2020. This show will be a socially distant show. Tickets €14.50 are available from tickets.ie

modernlove. have rapidly become one of indie-pop’s brightest and most talked about new bands. This October they will make their ‘Ireland Music Week’ debut and are releasing new single, the upbeat synth infused ‘Use Me’ on 25/09 ahead of their performance.  ‘Use Me’ owes much of its sound to EDM inspired, heavy dance hooks and aggressive yet crystal clear melodic production like that of Charli XCX.

‘Use Me’ is a song about being used.

It is about someone who knows their feelings for another are unrequited but is so desperate that they are willing to settle for even a semblance of affection or love from them. They are willing to let themselves be used to convincing themselves of a false notion of being close and intimate with this person. Even if it “doesn’t mean anything” to them, they can at least “pretend”.

The song went through many iterations before it became the heavy, club style, dance song it is now. Originally a more guitar-driven, indie rock song, the final version came about through meticulous remixing, reworking and sampling of the original material, along with the addition of electronic percussion and heavily processed, auto-tuned vocals lending to its ‘club tune’ atmosphere and feel. The ‘dance-drops’ of each chorus is aggressively fast-paced and heavy, highlighting the desperation and distress of the unrequited party and the lyrics explore how painful and unhealthy allowing oneself to continue in a relationship/dynamic like this can be.

New Music from Denise Chaila, Sorcha Richardson, God Knows, MuRli ‘Out The Gaff’

Collaborations are the lifeblood of many musicians. It’s something that many artists have struggled with throughout lockdown, having gone from constantly working with other people to being left to their own devices for months on end.

James Vincent McMorrow recognised this and decided to do something positive for the Irish music community. When lockdown ended, he invited a group of people he admired to a Dublin studio for the day. And so McMorrow , God Knows , Denise Chaila , MuRli , Sorcha Richardson , Conor Adams (All Tvvins ), Mark Prendergast (Kodaline ) and Cormac Butler (Producer – The Academic ) spent a cathartic day celebrating the life-affirming power of music and collaboration.

The result is the uplifting hip-hop, alt-pop and R&B crossover anthem ‘Out The Gaff’. God Knows of the Choice Music Prize winners, Rusangano Family kicks things off with his slick, charismatic flow before his bandmate MuRli storms in with the immediately infectious hook. Then Sorcha Richardson steps with a neo-R&B flavoured verse that’s a world away from anything she released on last year’s debut album ‘First Prize Bravery’ . Finally, Denise Chaila delivers style and sass in equal measure, her contemporary twist on timeless influences Lauryn Hill and Janelle Monáe recalling why her debut EP ‘Dual Citizenship’ made her such a hot tip.

In time we’ll surely see these four artists blasting ‘Out The Gaff’ to a festival crowd of thousands. For now, though, it’s a moment of pure escapism. The track was produced, mixed and mastered by James Vincent McMorrow .

The track’s lead artists and James Vincent McMorrow share their thoughts on what the collaboration means to them.

James Vincent McMorrow :

“I needed to come out of those six months of lockdown with some new perspective. For years I’ve talked about putting together groups of Irish musicians I admire and helping them to connect and create. This year taught me nothing is certain in life, and especially with live music being off the table for the moment, it felt more important than ever that I actually follow through on that. So I did, and it was genuinely magical. It was everything I had hoped it would be.

The fact this is literally the first thing this group of people created together feels special to me. Lyrically, when I hear it, I think of physically running from my house on the first day that lockdown restrictions were rolled back. I hear confidence and joy, people cathartically screaming the chorus at the top of their lungs in fields next year at festivals. Irish music can compete on any stage, with anything the rest of the world has to throw at it. This song says that unequivocally. I’m so proud to be a part of it.”

Denise Chaila :

“I’ve been cycling through extremes of emotion at light speed for the majority of the year. There’s been a lot to unpack, for all of us, and I’ve actually done a lot of it by stealing moments away from my adult brain and all the information and grief and anxiety it has to contend with, so I can dance in my bedroom and remember why I love music.

Being in the room that day and watching this song grow stronger and more defined with each additional voice – no strategising or overthinking, just play and genuine camaraderie – was one of those moments. I laughed and giggled and bantered and jumped up on the couch and traded bars throughout the whole process of making this. The joy in that room was incredible, and this is absolutely a small capsule of it! It’s one of the most effortless pieces of music I’ve ever created. I’m dreaming for the moment I can stand on a stage with everyone who was there that day and sing it loud with a crowd and say, “We made it out.” Play it loud and sing it with your whole heart.”

Sorcha Richardson :

“In May, I sat, on the edge of my seat, completely captivated and inspired, watching Denise and God Knows’ incredible performance at the National Gallery for Other Voices’ Courage series, and I had the overwhelming sense of how lucky I am to be part of such a rich musical community in Ireland.

When James got in touch last month, I jumped at the chance to be back in the studio with other musicians. I didn’t quite know what to expect but it was one of the most exciting and uplifting days I’ve had making music in a long time. It’s so invigorating to be in a room with other people, making music together with no rules, and for no other reason other than it’s the thing that you like to do the most.  I can’t wait for the day that we get to perform this together in a festival tent, whenever that may be.”

God Knows :

“I was a fan of everyone on this record already but being in the studio all together was a different type of energy. The result was better than I imagined. I wrote this with my family and some new friends and I can’t wait to do it again. I hope everyone who listens to this has the same experience as I do, which is pure joy!”

MuRli :

“The minute James started playing the initial beat, it was obvious this was going to be a banger of track. The chorus came almost instantly. I didn’t even have to think about it too much. It’s joyous, it’s fun and the one thing we all want to do right now is to get out of this situation we’ve found ourselves in this year, so I hope this song allows us to dream about what we can’t physically experience right now.

Despite all of the cancelled tours and festivals, music occupied a huge part of my day to day over the last six months. When the lockdown kicked in, I spent most of my time writing and recording in my bedroom and although I was very grateful to be able to spend the time writing, I was struck by how solitary a process it had become. I love writing with other people, I love being in a studio with my friends, creating in real time. I missed the collaborative nature of it.”
