IMRO Business of Music Seminar Series | The Importance of Visual Identity with Christian Tierney, Stephen Averill and Kathryn Mason

March 28, 2018 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Free

It is impossible to escape the importance of visual identity to artists in today’s music industry. From videos and photography, artwork, posters and even right down to clothing, the image portrayed by a band or artist will often set the tone for their brand with potential fans before hearing the performer’s music.

This upcoming IMRO seminar offers the opportunity to learn from the experience of some of Ireland’s most qualified professionals in the area of visual identity.

Christian Tierney / Music Videographer and Photographer
Christian Tierney is a 21 year old director and photographer from Dublin, Ireland. At the age of 15, Christian Tierney founded his YouTube channel with the aim of finding and sharing the best new Irish and international music through intimate, cinematic live sessions and interviews that he shoots himself. Since then he has grown it into a global music platform with over 10,000,000 views and 26,000 loyal subscribers. In the channel’s first year, he discovered and filmed the then unknown but soon to be global megastars, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, helping to introduce them to a wider Irish audience for the first time. Two years later, Christian discovered the then up and coming singer-songwriter James Bay and filmed the first ever recording of his song ‘Let It Go’ which has since gone on to be a global hit. As a result and despite his age, Christian has already gained extensive experience in the music industry shooting the biggest artists in the world like The Weeknd, Macklemore, Demi Lovato, Kendrick Lamar, Drake, The 1975, James Bay and many more as well as for organisations like TIDAL, Universal, Sony and Warner Music.

Alongside his music work, he creates video and photo content for UFC champion Conor McGregor via his digital brand TheMacLife.com, for which he was head videographer for the biggest fight in combat sports history, Conor McGregor vs Floyd Mayweather. Over a couple of months in Dublin and three weeks in Las Vegas, Christian created documentary style web episodes showing Conor’s training and media events all the way up to and including fight night.

He has also directed internationally award winning short films, official music videos and has photographed countless concerts and festivals like Electric Picnic, Longitude, Forbidden Fruit, Sea Sessions and Live at The Marquee.

Stephen Averill / Art Director and Design Consultant
Stephen Averill’s journey in design began in his early teens. Mainly spurred on by his love of music and being a child of the 60s he arrived a classic time for album artwork. He began by creating cover for the 7” vinyl sleeves for the singles he brought that came in plain white covers. Graphics became his natural career path and in the early 70s he joined Dublin agency Arks Advertising, working on a number of campaigns for carpets and consumables.

Having been involved in counter culture since the 60s – including dj-ing in a club called Middle Earth and founding a fanzine Freep – he naturally gravitated to the emerging punk movement he formed The Radiators from Space as singer, writer as well as graphic designer. Stephen left the band after their first album to concentrate on design and shortly after was approached by the bass player of a band who would become hugely successful. That meeting would become a career catalyst leading to one of the longest running creative partnerships in music and design history.

Having become Creative Director of The Helme Partnership he decided that he wanted to concentrate on design and set up the consultancy Works Associates. This company evolved through many iterations of location and personnel into AMP Visual where he worked with such clients as U2, Elvis Costello, Depeche Mode, The Mavericks and The Script.

This year Stephen decided it was time to explore new horizons outside of the company environment as an independent art director taking with him his many years of experience and enthusiasm. He also continues to perform with the Trouble Pilgrims the band that evolved from The Radiators as well as editing the online Americana fanzine Lonesome Highway which he founded to cover his interest in that genre. He has also lectured about his experiences in Ireland, the US and UK.
