IMRO | The Business of Music Seminar Series | The Role of the Music Video

January 31, 2019 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

The role of the music video has evolved and changed over the years, from a time when fans would patiently watch MTV in the hopes of seeing their favourite artists’ latest video, to the age of YouTube and Facebook where fans can now have instant access to an artist’s music video.

This instant access can also mean that any artist with a strong song and video that captures their audience has the potential the go viral. With it now possible for a music video to break a previously unknown artist globally, it could be argued that the music video is now an artist’s strongest marketing tool.

This upcoming IMRO seminar will explore the history of the music video, how to make the most of your budget and what lies in store for the future of the music video, featuring Hot Press’s Stuart Clark and directors Kate Dolan, Bob Gallagher and Brendan Canty. The event will be hosted by JOE.ie’s Paddy McKenna.

Brendan Canty

Brendan’s work is hugely evocative and is recognised for its authentic, moving performances. His use of colour, understanding of music, the juxtaposition of form and general artistic streak make him really something quite special.

Brendan started out making unofficial videos for music he loved and within a few months, The Creator’s Project described his work as the ‘Best Unofficial Music Videos on the Internet’.

In September 2013 Brendan made a video for a then unknown artist called Hozier for his track, ‘Take Me To Church’. The powerfully emotive film went viral and has over 500 million views and two MTV VMA 2015 nominations to date – Best Direction and Best Rock Video. Aside from the videos Brendan runs a music label and MGMT company called Feel Good Lost who work with artists such as Talos and Lilla Vargen.  In 2014 The Irish Times selected him as one of the 50 most creative people in Ireland.

Kate Dolan

Kate graduated with an Honours Degree in Film & Television Production from the National Film School, IADT in 2012. There, she majored in Directing and minored in Editing. My graduate short Breathe In (2012) was selected for a number of Irish and international film festivals. She then worked as a Broadcast Producer in TBWA Dublin for almost 2 years after graduating.

In 2014, Kate attended Berlinale Talents to develop a short called Little Doll at the Short Film Script Station. The film depicts the first same-sex crush of a young girl. The short then premiered as part of Generation Kplus at Berlinale 2016. For her work with Little Doll, Kate was included in the British Council’s fiveFilms4freedom 2016 Global List – 33 inspiring people from around the world promoting freedom, equality and LGBT rights every day.

In 2016 Kate was very lucky to be chosen to take part in the Guiding Lights, the UK’s leading mentoring scheme for filmmakers and was paired with director Alice Lowe (Prevenge, Sightseers.)

In 2017, Kate was funded by Screen Ireland to make Catcalls, an irreverent Horror about a sexual predator who gets what’s coming to him. The film won Best Short Film at the YDA Ireland in 2018 and has played at many festivals all over the world since its premiere at the Cork Film Festival in 2017.

Recently, Kate was selected for Screen Ireland to take part in their inaugural POV scheme. The selected projects will enter a development and mentorship phase before three will be greenlit, with a budget of up to €400,000 each – the money has been ring-fenced from Screen Ireland’s overall production budget. They will be aiming to enter production in late 2019/early 2020. You Are Not My Mother is a Horror feature to be written and directed by Kate and produced by Deirdre Levins (Nails) for Fantastic Films.

In the world of music videos, Kate has gained praise for her work with Bitch Falcon and Maria Kelly as well as her recently critically acclaimed video for Pillow Queens’ ‘Gay Girls’.

Bob Gallagher

Bob Gallagher is an Irish filmmaker and visual artist. He’s crafted award winning music videos working with acts such as Girl Band, Villagers, SOAK, Lisa Hannigan, Myles Manley and James Vincent McMorrow. In 2016 he received the RADAR award for Best Music Video and Best New Director. He was recently awarded Best Irish Music Video of 2018 at the Irish embassy in London for his work with Pillow Queens on ‘Favourite’. His videos have featured regularly on Stereogum, Noisey, Promonews and a host of international music websites’ ‘best of’ lists, including an appearance at number two in Red Bull Music’s ‘Ten Weirdest Music Videos of All Time’ with Girl Band’s ‘Paul’. In 2017 Bob was hand picked to attend a ten day practical workshop in Cuba with Werner Herzog, who afterwards declared him a ‘good soldier of cinema’.

Stuart Clark

Originally a buccaneering broadcaster with the offshore Radio Caroline, Stuart arrived in Ireland at the height of the pirate radio boom. After the pirates were silenced by the government, he turned his attentions to journalism with a well-respected column for the Limerick Tribune.

Brought up to Dublin by Hot Press, he’s risen through the ranks to become the magazine’s Deputy Editor. He also has a weekly music slot with Pat Kenny on Newstalk, and contributes to various RTÉ, Virgin Media and BBC shows. His words of wisdom have also graced the pages of various non-muso publications including The Daily Mail, Food And Wine, TV Now and The Sunday Business Post, as well as the lecture rooms of Pulse College. In 2017, he won the Magazines Ireland Journalist of the Year Award.
