William Goldstein has been a recording artist for both Motown Records and CBS Masterworks. He is distributed worldwide by The Orchard with over 60 albums currently available generating over 700,000 streams monthly. He has scored over 50 Movie and Television projects, including Fame and The Miracle Worker. He has written on the arts for The New York Times and The Los Angeles Times. He has been a pioneer in the use of computers and electronic instruments in music. His most distinguishing characteristic as a composer/ pianist is his gift of “Instant Composition”, which he is exploring in many diverse ways and sharing with audiences through Master Classes, recitals and albums.
His broad experience with diverse genres of music combined with his ability to “speak the language of music” in real time, have given him the tools to help others unlock direct access to their own creativity.
The following topics will be addressed in the class:
• Improvising, or creating music in real time, as a tool to harnessing inspiration and applying that inspiration to specific film sequences, when writing under time pressures and deadlines. To that end, the importance of building a musical vocabulary and technique so that one can express oneself in the language of music as easily as one expresses oneself in their spoken language.
• Developing orchestration skills to make small ensembles sound like large ones.
• Mixing electronic scores, or scores with mostly samples and only a few live instruments, so that they sound totally created with live musicians.
• Learning to trust ones inner musical intuition. Sometimes the first ideas that occur to us are the best.
