About Aslan

Aslan, who took their name from the heroic lion in the C.S. Lewis series of books chronicling the fictional land of
Narnia, (Aslan is the Turkish for ‘Lion’), emerged from the working class areas of Finglas and Ballymun in Dublin’s Northside, in the mid 1980s. They released a demo single, ‘This Is’, in the Spring of 1986, which was a huge hit and became the longest ever play-listed single on Ireland’s pop radio station, RTÉ 2fm.

After a series of shows in the UK, Aslan picked up The Stag/Hot Press,’ Most Promising New Band’ award and signed to EMI. In 1988 their debut album, ‘Feel No Shame’, went straight to Number 1 in the Irish charts and within a couple of months was certified Gold. In the same year, just as the option for their 2nd album had been picked up, Aslan infamously imploded, torn apart by overindulgence of all kinds.

What was supposed to be a one-off charity gig in July 1993 in Finglas reignited the spark and Aslan landed a new record deal with BMG. Their single, “Crazy World”, entered the charts at Number 4 and became one of the most played songs on Irish radio that year. Its release was followed by their Gold-selling album, ‘Goodbye Charlie Moonhead’.

Aslan’s self-released third album, ‘Here Comes Lucy Jones’, led to the band being nominated in seven categories of the 1997 Hot Press readers poll. A series of successful releases followed including double-platinum “Best of” album, ‘Shame About Lucy Moonhead’, platinum selling ‘Waiting For This Madness To End’, triple-platinum selling ‘The Platinum Collection’, top-ten charting ‘For Some Strange Reason’ and their covers album, ‘Aslan Uncase’d’.

2010 saw the band undertake an extensive Australian tour which took them to Sydney, Perth, Melbourne, Brisbane and Canberra.

“Please Don’t Stop”, a film made by Paul Andrews, Daragh Murphy and Ronan Quinn, documenting the band’s 30 years together, premiered in Dublin earlier this year and is now available on DVD. Aslan scored another Irish album chart number one this year when their latest album, ‘Nudie Books and Frenchies’, was released on EMI. Not only did the fans like the album, but the critics described it as one of Aslan’s best albums to date and it received rave reviews across the board.

THE LION IS STILL ROARING…
