New Music Dublin Kicks Off This Week

New Music Dublin 2014New Music Dublin have just announced further details of events taking place as part of the festival. The festival will be taking place from 6th to 9th March in the National Concert Hall. All events need to be pre-booked via the National Concert Hall box office – www.nch.ie.

New Music Dublin Talks Programme
Bernard Clarke (RTÉ lyric fm Nova) and Donnacha Dennehy (Artistic Director NMD 2014) in collaboration with the Contemporary Music Centre host a series of short talks and discussions with composers, performers, musicologists and commentators active in new music.

THURSDAY 6th March 2014  6.00pm: New Music NOW! – Bernard Clarke and Donnacha Dennehy discuss what’s “currently trending” on the world’s contemporary music stage with panelists Bob Gilmore, Hans Abrahamsen, Mary Dullea and John Godfrey

FRIDAY 7th March 2014  4.30pm: Are Friends Electric? – Roger Doyle, Judith Ring and Karen Power join Bernard Clarke and Donnacha Dennehy to discuss Stockhausen and electronica: from Karlheinz to Kraftwerk, from Kraftwerk to Ikeda.

SATURDAY 8th March 2014
1.30pm: The medium is the message and the message is? – How emerging composers engage with their public – hear the views of Breiffni O Byrne, Laurence Mackin, Evonne Ferguson and Toner Quinn.

6.30pm: An audience with Hans Abrahamsen Meet the composer before the Irish premiere of his influencial work, Schnee.

SUNDAY 9th of March 2014
2.00pm: Lonely Child – Musicologist and performer Bob Gilmore explores Claude Vivier’s Lonely Child in advance of the Irish premiere with the RTÉ NSO and Sylvia O’ Brien. His biography of Vivier is forthcoming from the University of Rochester Press this June.

Workshops and Masterclasses

SATURDAY 8th March 2014
10.00am – 1.00pm: Hans Abrahamsen and RTÉ ConTempo Quartet – Listen in as 6 Irish composers take part in a workshop facilitated by CMC with Hans Abrahamsen and the RTÉ ConTempo Quartet. Composers Breffni O’Byrne, David Collier, Patrick Connolly, Seán Doherty, Deirdre McKay, Norah Walsh were selected following a call for expressions of interest.

SUNDAY 9th of March 2014
11.00am – 1.00pm:  Masterclasses with Jennifer Walshe – The integration of the body, movement and visual elements in music ranging from chamber works through to opera. – Irish composer Jennifer Walshe will give a talk about her compositions and will work with 3 composer/performers: David Bremner, Timothy Cape and Athena Corcoran-Tadd.

SATURDAY 8th March 2014 – One on One Concerts
Kevin Barry Room (From 11.30am -1.30pm)

Alex Petcu (percussion), Cora Venus Lunny (violin), Roddy O’Keefe (trombone), Izumi Kimura (piano), Courtney Orlando (violin), Michelle O’Rourke (voice) and Kate Ellis (cello) perform short solo works by Philippe Hurel, Liam O’Sullivan, Daniel Barkley, Mark Hennessy, Karen Power, Anthony Wigglesworth, Louis Andriessen, Amanda Feery and Linda Buckley.
Drop in and hear some new music up close!

ALL WEEKEND – Installations
Various Locations

Composers, sound artists and ensembles including Gareth Averill, Jimmy Eadie, Fractal Music, Jonathan Nangle, Karen Power and Crash will be bringing empty rooms and spaces around the NCH alive with sound and video installations. Come along and try a keyboard that plays visuals, see sculptural light installations, experience a mysterious zone of elusive sounds and mysterious images, create your own piece by playing with turntables and lots more.

Short AV works (ranging from 1- 10 minutes) by 13 artists have been selected  to be shown throughout the Festival. Visitors will be able to select, watch and listen to these widely varied works by Marc Balbirnie, Jessica Conway, Edgar Grunewald, Marie Hanlon, Breifne Holohan, Vincent Kennedy, Trevor Knight, Ailís Ní Ríain, Paul O’Donoghue, Natasa Paterson-Paulberg, Mirjam Tally, Maura McDonnell and Mike Glennon.
