EP Release Announced By Art of Algebra

November 6, 2020

‘Under A Different Light’ is the new four-track EP from Art of Algebra, set for release on 27th November. The EP was written and produced entirely during the weeks of the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown. During this time, producer David Hallinan (A.K.A. Art of Algebra) took advantage of the reduced opportunity to travel and socialise, and converted this time into making new music.

As with Art of Algebra’s 11 track debut album, ‘Under a Different Light’ is characterised by a diverse mix of styles and genres blending trip-hop, downtempo, dark ambient and experimental electronica.

The record continues to draw upon the same influences that have been key to shaping the Art of Algebra sound to date, such as Boards of Canada, Massive Attack, Rival Consoles and Four Tet. However, the EP also marks a new direction, with more emphasis on simplistic floating synthesizer textures coupled with a more acoustic and organic percussive sound.

Thematically, the record explores themes of light and shade, and how these are expressed in musical tone and timbre. Rather than being luminous at times and simply dark at others, the record invites the listener to be equally comfortable in both its brighter and darker moments – never truly in the dark, but in the shade.

‘Under A Different Light’ follows the recent release of two Art of Algebra singles: ‘Maasai’ and ‘Praying on a Gamble (feat. Breezy iDeyGoke)’. Both singles did very well with coverage on the likes of Nialler9, GoldenPlec, RTÉ.ie, Dublin Live and more as well as receiving strong radio support from 2FM, 98FM, Beat 102103, 8Radio, PlayIrish, KCLR, Flirt FM and more.

The cover photograph for ‘Under A Different Light’ was taken by Venezuelan photographer Valentina Alvarez.
