First Fortnight launches star-studded line-up for the New Year

December 3, 2010

The line-up for First Fortnight, the annual music gig that brightens up January for the bargain price of just €10, was officially unveiled this week. Showcasing 2011’s hottest new Irish talent, First Fortnight will feature headline acts Codes, And So I Watch You From Afar, with support from Dark Room Notes and Le Galaxie for an exciting music event in The Button Factory, Temple Bar on Saturday 15th January 2011.

First Fortnight is an arts-based mental health awareness project that happens in the first two weeks of every year, providing a mix of inspiring debate and musical entertainment. This year First Fortnight has teamed up with Amnesty International Ireland to support its campaign challenging mental health prejudice and discrimination.

Speaking of the event, Daragh Anderson of Codes said: “We got involved with this event because mental health affects all of us – whether it’s directly or a friend, a colleague, or family member who is experiencing difficulties.
A gig like this is great, as not only does music bring people together, it also clearly shows that mental health problems aren’t taboo, and that simply by being open and talking about it, we can help fight the prejudice and discrimination that exists.”

The bands are contributing their time free of charge and at just €10 per ticket, all proceeds will be donated to Amnesty International Ireland.

Colm O’Gorman, Executive Director of Amnesty International Ireland, said: “Our research showed that nearly two thirds of people said they had been avoided or shunned because of a mental health problem, and more than a third of people said they had been treated unfairly in relation to their social life.

“We know that the Christmas and New Year periods can be a particularly difficult and lonely time, so having an event like this in the calendar is great timing. It gives us an opportunity to come together and fight mental health prejudice and discrimination.”

The music gig will be preceded by a lively discussion on the topic of attitudes and behaviours towards people with mental health problems in Ireland today. The panel will include high profile individuals representing the arts, personal experience, business and service providers debating prejudice and discrimination.
