New Editor at The Journal of Music

December 16, 2010

The Journal of Music has just announced Benedict Schlepper-Connolly as its new Editor. The change happens as the magazine enters an exciting new era, with its redevelopment into a major digital publication in 2011. Schlepper-Connolly, also a composer and producer, has been with the magazine since 2007, most recently as Deputy Editor. A director of the music company Ergodos, which he co-founded in 2006, his work has been performed by Resurgam, Crash Ensemble as well as his own ensembles. Having studied music at Trinity College, in the United States and Germany, Benedict now lives between Dublin and Berlin.

Commenting on his appointment, Schlepper-Connolly said, “It's exciting to be leading an important publication such as The Journal of Music into new terrain. With the launch of our new online version in 2011 the capacity for a profound engagement with our community is unprecedented, and the audience for music and ideas greater than ever.”

The Journal of Music was founded in 2000 by musician Toner Quinn, who edited the magazine to this year. For these ten years it was published as a bimonthly print edition, with a growing online presence. After winning the UTNE Independent Press Award for Arts Coverage in 2010, the decision was made to remodel the magazine as an online publication, with a more occasional print edition.

Quinn, who continues to be involved in the magazine as Publisher, spoke of his decision to step back from the editorship: “When I started the Journal in November 2000 I had no plan beyond the second issue. After ten years of publishing the most wonderful writers and thinkers on music, I believe it is time for a change. While still involved as Publisher, I also want to develop other projects. A change of editor is a healthy event in the life of a publication. Benedict is someone who understands the magazine and its readers intimately, and I am certain that this change will bring a fresh look at the world of music, while maintaining our high editorial standards.”
