NoCrows Set to Launch Fourth Album | “Waiting for the Tide”

NoCrows“Waiting for the Tide”, NoCrows’ fourth album, launches this Saturday, 24th May at The Hawkswell Theatre, Sligo. The first release since 2010’s “NoCrows on the Moon”, “Waiting for the Tide” came together on two trips to Sligo’s Coney Island.

The band’s line up has expanded to six in the past year: Sligo singer songwriter Ray Coen is the newest member. Likewise, violinist & composer Oleg Ponomarev, of Loyko, Yurodny and Koshka fame, has toured and recorded as a guest of NoCrows for some years now. Ponomarev’s Eastern European Gypsy influence in the group has grown over time and this recording features two of his compositions as well as original material from his five bandmates. Coen and Ponomarev add their own creative force to an already swirling melting pot of musical styles and cultures, driven by Swiss cellist/mandolinist Anna Houston, Carbonell’s manouche guitar stylings and bassist Eddie Lee’s driving lines. Waterboys fiddler and longtime Sligo resident, Steve Wickham, is a founder member of the ensemble and he makes a particularly poignant vocal tribute to his beloved Sligo’s beauty on his song “Rainbow over Sligo”.  It is truly a Sligo album, written and recorded in Sligo, inspired by the place, its people and its beauty.

NoCrows are:

Anna Houston: mandolin, cello, dulcitone & vocals

Steve Wickham: fiddle, guitar, mandolin & vocals

Oleg Ponomarev: fiddle

Ray Coen: guitar, fiddle & vocals

Felip Carbonell: guitar & vocals

Eddie Lee: double bass, flute & percussion

Having spent nine years together, No Crows have had performances at some of Europe’s top festivals, including Glastonbury and Dranouter.

“Waiting for the Tide” will be officially launched at The Hawkswell Theatre, Sligo this Saturday, 24th May. Doors at 8pm | Tickets €18/€15.

Debut Album from Irish-based Ohio Songwriter Karson

KarsonSinger/songwriter Ken Karson from Cincinnati Ohio USA is set to release his debut album, “Just in Time”, on 15th November.

Karson’s lyrics are crafted to expose the divisions that usually exist between light and dark, truth and falsehood, and pain and pleasure that we all wrestle with, but with a spiritual sensibility that his listeners will embrace.

In a modern world where sometimes the pace can be exhausting, listening to Karson’s music helps to slow life down as time well spent even if it’s only for a few fleeting minutes.

All of his tracks have been skilfully and professionally arranged and performed, and can be categorized as a collection of rock roots tracks, with both classical and modern persuasions. Whether the subject is serious or light-hearted, the quality of his music quickly becomes apparent as it is driven home by his straightforward and accessible style. He never uses flash or gimmicks, but presents each track with lyrical and musical clarity and soulful elegance.

Recorded and produced by Rob Mancini at GMG Studio One in Ireland, “Just in time” is Karson’s debut and first release on GMG Records. The album will be available from all major online retailers from 15th November.

Letterkenny Duo Constant Supply Release Debut Album

Constant Supply‘The Coast Ain’t Clear’ is the shimmering debut album from alternative Letterkenny duo Constant Supply. Recorded with Villagers man Tommy McLaughlin in his Attica Studio, this dark and delicious debut is awash with texture, catchy choruses and layer upon layer of guitar and vocal, anchored by a solid organic bass and metronomic drum machine. The album is now available as a free download from www.constantsupply.bandcamp.com.

Consisting of James Gillen on guitars and vocals and Conal Sweeney on bass, Constant Supply create melodic, atmospheric compositions, driven along through light and dark alleyways by a pulsing beat. Evoking the ghosts of Pavement, Slint, Radiohead, Nirvana and Elliott Smith, the northwest pair have developed an original and enthralling sound that marks them out as true mavericks on the Irish music scene. By marrying skittery rhythms, fuzzy riffs and a hypnotic bassline new single ‘3rd in Line’ is a perversely upbeat and unsettling affair that seeps into your consciousness and refuses to budge.

Constant Supply released their debut ‘Alleviate EP’ in 2011 through UK label Take Aim Fire leading to gigs around the country and lots of radio coverage including a session at 2FM’s renowned Studio 8. The Donegal duo’s new single and debut album are both available as a free download with bonus track ‘Medicine Ball’ from www.constantsupply.bandcamp.com from October 7th 2013.

“Inspired by You” | Debut Album from Christine Deady

Christine Deady

Inspired By You is the much anticipated debut album from West Cork singer-songwriter, Christine Deady.

No stranger to the live music scene, Christine has previously shared stages with the legendary Paul Brady and performed with Glen Hansard and The Frames. Last year, she co-wrote the winning song in IMRO’s Christie Hennessy Song Competition, “Follow the Water”.

It was in 2010 after Christine’s final show on tour with Paul Brady that he offered her the very sound advice to take a break from the madness of the live scene and to work on putting her debut album together, and this she did. Christine retreated to her homeland of West Cork, took in the landscape and salt air and was whisked away in an unexpected adventure by its beauty and that of its people.

Upon hearing the first note Christine’s instantly recognisable voice is intriguing. She portrays an honesty and vulnerability that is refreshingly sincere and in the words of musician John Spillane ‘utterly captivating’. However it is clear that there is more to this songwriter than just a pretty voice, having previously won awards for her poetry Christine’s lyrics show that she is a woman who is not easily swayed by the supposed finer things in life but more concerned with the real and cumbersome truths of the heart. Her style of writing coupled with the unique use of her voice is folky in the sense that she draws you in and tells a story.

Christine’s album was funded through a Fundit campaign supported hugely by the people of Clonakilty in West Cork and was recorded locally over the winter and spring months. The album is in a sense a homage to the spirit of resilience and the ‘can do’ attitude that is sweeping our country. Abounded with songs of hope, love, loss, perseverance and happiness, this album has stories that resonate with each of us. Above all this is undoubtedly an uplifting and triumphant album full of spirit and heart.  These songs are; Inspired By You.

The album is available through Christine’s Bancamp page here: http://christinedeady.bandcamp.com/album/christine-deady-inspired-by-you

Debut Single from Billy Treacy | “Woe”

Billy Treacy_Woe“Woe!” is the debut single from Dublin singer/songwriter Billy Treacy. Billy is well known around Dublin’s Temple Bar as the lead singer in the Ha’Penny Heads who have had a residency for the past three years in The Ha’Penny Bridge Inn. Brought up over a pub in Dublin’s Inner City, Billy served his music apprenticeship listening to a vast array of music and songs played and performed in the pub.

It was later in Chicago that he first started playing guitar, writing songs and opening for various different Irish acts like Sharon Shannon and Stockton’s Wing on tour there.

“I feel so strongly about the message in “Woe!”. I begged and borrowed to get the song recorded and released. I wrote it in a couple of hours one day this summer as a way of venting my anger, frustration and helplessness at all that is happening in Ireland at the moment. I know that there are thousands of proud people out there who feel the same way and I hope they will identify with my song.” Billy Treacy

“Woe” will be available for download from iTunes from this Friday, 16th August.
