Other Voices | Derry – Londonderry 2014 Announced

Following on from the recent announcement regarding the twelfth Other Voices pilgrimage to Dingle this December, the world renowned music television series today revealed that Derry/Londonderry is also on the musical itinerary for a second visit, following the hugely successful inaugural Other Voices weekend earlier this year in the UK City of Culture 2013.other voices

Other Voices will strike out for Derry/Londonderry in February 2014, stopping off to record music and musings on February 7th, 8th and 9th. The stunning Glassworks building will once again play host to a galaxy of local and international musical talent all of which will be streamed live to a number of local venues, while the Banter Sessions and the IMRO Other Room will also be filmed in the City of Song. The hugely popular Other Voices Music Trail will run in venues and spaces across the city, bringing the spirit of Other Voices to neighbourhoods and communities across the Derry City Council area.

Actor Aidan Gillen will once again host the show, presenting the recordings and events in both Dingle and Derry/Londonderry. Already scheduled to perform in St. James’ Church on the Dingle leg of the Other Voices gathering are David Gray, Hozier, Lisa O’Neill, Mogwai, Patty Griffin, John Grant, Asgeir, Agnes Obel and Lulu James with more yet to be announced. The line-up for Derry/Londonderry remains firmly under wraps and will be announced just after Christmas.

Philip King, series editor, spoke of the return to Derry commenting, “Last year we had a remarkable experience in Derry. We met really talented musicians and production people, forged a suite of partnerships with CultureTech and heard just great music. We are delighted to return to Derry to nurture and develop the relationships established between Dingle and Derry last year. We have an opportunity to build an enduring legacy over the next three years, share our knowledge and learning with the city and establish a renewable and refreshable resource making this singing city audible and visible the world over”

The Minister for Culture, Arts and Leisure Carál Ní Chuilín welcomed the return to Derry.  She said:  “Other Voices is one of those unique and special events that leaves a lasting impression. It offers the full musical package and provides experience for performers and back stage people alike. It captured the spirit of City of Culture 2013 and I am so pleased that it has agreed to return to Derry in February even bigger and better than before and expanding their music trail to communities surrounding the City centre as part of my Department’s approach to strategic development of the North West of Ireland – it’s an event not to be missed.”

Mayor of Derry, Cllr Martin Reilly said:

“I am delighted that Other Voices is set to return to the city again following the success of the event during our 2013 UK City of Culture celebrations, an event which achieved phenomenal success in terms of involving local talent and showcasing our city to an international audience.  As Mayor I have had the opportunity to meet with Philip and his team in the City and to explore the possibilities of a return visit.  Other Voices February 2014 production will complement the City of Culture Legacy Plan which has a special attention on Derry-Londonderry as a City of Music in 2014. This opportunity in 2014 will build on community involvement, educational programmes and national and international showcase for local talent from this city as well as inviting visitors to see what Derry has to offer.”

Sound and Vision | Industry Day

A one day exploration of the collision between music and moving imagein studio image

Generator NI is a new three year music industry development programme for Northern Ireland. Generator NI will be working in partnership with Honeycomb – Creative Works to bring the music and creative industries to key cities and towns across Northern Ireland. The series of industry events will create invaluable opportunities for artists, labels, managers and digital content creatives to meet, network and learn together.

The next event for the partnership will be a Sound and Vision day during the Foyle Film Festival this November. Four unique events dedicated to the marriage of music and moving image are programmed to span from morning to night on Friday the 22nd of November in L’Derry. The events are as follows:

 11am – 1pm

Workshop – how to place your music in film, trailers, television, advertising and computer games with Adrian Cooke and Dex Lush (Portmanteau) / Nerve Centre Cinema

Portmanteau is a UK music agency that represents a range of record labels, publishers and artists in order to place their music in audio-visual productions from around the world – online, on television and in film. They cover both master and publishing copyrights in the majority of cases and so can clear for use quickly and in ‘one-stop’. They’ve placed across all media – from The Fast and The Furious trailer to The Iron Lady, from Xbox to Adidas. They’ll take the audience on a comprehensive journey through all aspects of music placement.

1.45pm – 2.45pm

Inside the music supervisor’s mind – Ian Neil (with Q and A) / Nerve Centre Cinema

We welcome Ian Neil to discuss the vital role of the music supervisor and take a closer look at the part music has played in a number of films. A music supervisor requires not just an encyclopedic knowledge of music but also an instinctive sense of which song or piece of music will add value to any given scene. Some of cinema’s most iconic moments stem from using the right track at the right time – Stealers Wheel’s “Stuck In the Middle With You” in Reservoir Dogs or the Rolling Stones’ “Tell Me” in Mean Streets, for example.

Ian Neil is one of the film industry’s leading music supervisors, having lent his expertise to films such as Snatch, Kick Ass, Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa, Control, Nowhere Boy, Sex & Drugs & Rock’n’Roll and 127 Hours. We’re delighted to welcome Ian to play some of his most memorable scenes in film and talk through the pathway towards the music use.

3.30pm – 6pm

Screening of The Chemical Brothers live film “Don’t Think” and creative session with director Adam Smith (with Q and A) / Nerve Centre Cinema

Join director Adam Smith for an hour long workshop on the collision between music and image, followed by a screening of Don’t Think.  Adam will play extracts from some of his work in music videos (including with long term collaborators The Streets) through to chatting about directing “the greatest episode of Doctor Who there has ever been” (The Guardian). Joining him on stage will be actor Mark Monero, and together in the cinema they’ll recreate some of the live visual effects used in Don’t Think – including the iconic LED man. You’ll not believe your eyes when you see how it was done.

Described by Mojo Magazine as “a psychedelic masterpiece”, Don’t Think captures a 2011 performance of The Chemical Brothers at the Fuji Rocks Festival in Japan. An unmissable event.

10pm – 1am

Screening of “Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait”, live scored by Stuart Brathwaite DJ set (Mogwai) / Sandinos

Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait is a 2006 French documentary film focusing on the playing style of the French football player Zinedine Zidane. The film is a documentary focused purely on Zidane during the Spanish Liga Real Madrid vs. Villarreal CF game on April 23, 2005 at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium and was filmed in real time using 17 synchronized cameras. During the last minutes of the match, Zidane was sent off as a result of a brawl. The screening will be accompanied by a DJ set from Stuart Brathwaite, the main creative force in Mogwai, the Scottish instrumental band who composed the original music for the film, and whose immense body of work continues to underscore extraordinary film and moving image.

Jetplane Landing Announce Video For New Single ‘Beat Generation…Ha!’

JETPLANEJetplane Landing are from Derry, Northern Ireland. The band was formed in 1999 by Andrew Ferris (guitar/vocals) and Jamie Burchell (bass); later joined by lead guitarist, Cahir O’Doherty (ex-Fighting With Wire).   The second single to be taken from Jetplane Landing’s fourth studio album ‘Don’t Try’, “Beat Generation… Ha!” is a meditation on being an outsider, written (in part) from the perspective of the oft-overlooked writer Gregory Corso.

Jetplane state – “Who said creativity should ever come from anything less than rage, than from terror, than from isolation? Not us; not Corso; not others: “If you’re going to try, go all the way. There is no other feeling like that. You will be alone with the gods, and the nights will flame with fire.”

Drawing inspiration from ‘80s hardcore and associated with the British Post-Hardcore movement (see Hundred Reasons, Biffy Clyro, Million Dead, Reuben and Hell Is For Heroes) they released their debut album, ‘Zero for Conduct’ in 2001 and followed it up with ‘Once Like a Spark’ in 2003. Regarded as a scene-defining record, ‘Once Like A Spark’ propelled the band onto even larger stages and deeper into the hearts of fans of mathy, cerebral punk rock.  The band’s third album, ‘Backlash Cop’ [2007], incorporated funk and hip hop elements, inviting comparisons to political torchbearers Rage Against the Machine.

The band took a break from playing live in 2007 and returned to public view six years later with this new record ‘Don’t Try’ and new drummer Craig McKean (ex-Fighting With Wire). A taut, visceral art-rock affair ‘Don’t Try’ draws easiest comparison to the bands work on fan-favourite EP ‘Els Quatre Gats’ [2002] however offers elements from the band’s entire recorded output so far. “Beat Generation… Ha!” Is available digitally from December 2nd and features brand new track ‘Paco’ on its virtual flipside.
