The Riverbank Newbridge host night of music collaboration

BECWhat do you get when 3 of the leading performers in Irish music get together in Newbridge for one night? An unforgettable performance of traditional Irish and English Bluegrass music that will keep your toes tapping and feet stomping. Don’t miss this unique musical event with new collaboration between tin whistle player Mary Bergin, award-winning instrumentalist Tim Edey and, singer and Bodhran player for The Chieftains, Kevin Conneff.

Mary Bergin is acknowledged as one of Ireland’s finest ever tin whistle players, a founder of the popular female group Dordan she has toured worldwide and her album “Feadog stain” is a timeless classic.

Tim Edey, BBC R2 Best musician of 2012, is born across the water in Co. Kent. Tim is both a successful solo and session artist with his recent album “Sailing Over the 7th String” produced by none other than Robin Wynn Evans (producer to The Manic street preachers). Tim’s CV is like a who’s who of Irish music—Christy Moore, The Chieftains, Mary Black, Altan, Begley+Cooney, and Sharon Shannon to name a few.

Kevin Conneff, of The Chieftains, is often said to have helped popularise the rise of the Bodhran worldwide from his 37 years as a member of the legendary band, of whom he is also the singer. Kevin has a lovely singing voice and the list of people he has played and sang with is literally endless. Kevin is a master traditional singer and Bodhran player whom invented his own style copied by many.

New Music from Conor Hamilton

Conor Hamilton16-year-old Dublin singer-songwriter, Conor Hamilton, has just released his latest single, You Got It In You. The song was recorded at Dublin’s prestigious Sun Studios and produced by Mick Heffernan.

Despite his youth, Conor has talent to burn. Currently in Transition Year at Glasnevin-based Irish-language school, Scoil Chaitriona, there’s a different kind of transition taking place in his life that will prove many things to those who have doubts or problems with teenage kicks. And that transition is going from relative obscurity to becoming a household name.

It all started for Conor some years ago when he watched his younger sister, Taylor, perform as part of a stage school production. “It seemed like it was great fun,” Conor recalls, “and from that point on I had a strong feeling that music was what I wanted to do.”

Love of music was already there – part of the family genes, you could say. Conor’s father, James, had previous experience in various bands whilst growing up, and this ingrained passion for music had been passed on to his children.

“I liked the performing end of it,” says Conor, who has been a member of a couple of Dublin-based stage schools for several years. “And because my dad is so into music, there were always instruments lying around the house. I picked up a guitar at the age of seven, and shortly after started guitar lessons.”

Conor has continued to develop and over the past few years his profile has risen thanks to various presenting jobs for RTÉ Young People programmes (including Elev8, for which he interviewed, no less, Hollywood actress Jessica Biel). And when Conor is not doing irregular but very enjoyable jobs like this he’s focusing on his songwriting, which he began from the age of 11. Currently, he has over 25 songs under his belt.

“When you’re playing guitar and you get a good chord progression, and when you like it, a melody comes into your head,” explains Conor. “Writing songs is a great way to express yourself, a great way to get your feelings down onto a page. Am I a reflective kind of person? Well, I tend to think about things a lot – not necessarily in an academic way, but just thinking. And I like to spend a lot of time outside…”

Quality control is crucial to Conor, who always aims to write the best songs he possibly can. “I’m not into writing pieces of separate songs and then stitching them together to make one. I try to be consistent and finish one completely after another.”

To his credit, also, Conor can write songs in relatively short periods of time. “I’d be happy with songs, for example, that take about three hours. I don’t like songwriting to be a conveyor belt-type operation for me, though – I have to be in the right frame of mind. If songs are rushed, I think you can hear it.”

What inspires him to write songs? “Certain things… Looking out the window and something will catch my eye. And sometimes I write a song based around one word.”

So far, it’s so very good for this Dublin teenager who writes songs that are smart and contemporary but which are rooted in classic pop music traditions. Each step along the way, he says, has been small but significant – steps that lead to something a little bit bigger every time.

Conor’s latest release comes on the back of two previous singles (DaydreamerLately – both in 2013) and he has headlined a sold-out show at the Academy, one of Dublin’s premier music venues.

And Conor isn’t stopping there, as this summer will hopefully see the release of an as-yet untitled six-track EP.

Old Hannah Launch “Irish Boys” EP in Whelans Tonight

Old HannahOld Hannah are a four-piece from Sligo, with a sound that may conjure images of the Appalachian mountains before Yeats’s Ben Bulben.  They recently released their debut EP ‘Irish Boys’ which has already received frequent national airplay on RTE, local Irish radio and recently secured them a slot at the Other Voices Music trail in Derry.

Old Hannah are Anthony Mannion (dobro/guitar/vocals), Lucie Crichlow (guitar/vocals), Luke Mercer (guitar/vocals), and Leo Morris (banjo/guitar/vocals).

The band are firmly rooted in old time sounds, as an early passion for bluegrass, western swing and roots saw them mix traditional and contemporary influences into a truly unique set of original music. Three-part vocal harmonies are the core to their sound and are accompanied by masterful dobro, guitar and banjo picking.

Over the last two years Old Hannah have had two live performances on RTE radio 1 (Arena & Countrywide) along with various other radio play (John Creedon, Niall Toner, John Murray, Lee Gooch, Frank Galligan). They were also invited to perform on the RTE Big Music Week Train, the TwoTube Sessions and TG4’s Ceol ar an Imeall. They have made themselves known on the Irish festival and touring circuit, performing at the likes of Castlepalooza, Knockanstockan and Sligo Live and have shared the stage with Lisa Hannigan at the Turning Pirate show in Dublin. Debut EP from Limerick Singer Songwriter Cillian King

Cillian KingCillian King is a young singer/songwriter hailing from Limerick City. With a background in traditional Irish music on the concertina, piano and banjo from the age of six, the self-taught guitarist turned his attention to songwriting in the summer of 2011 and has since gone from strength to strength. He has gained much experience by appearing regularly as the support act for highly successful Limerick folk-rockers, Hermitage Green, from which he has developed a loyal following.

No longer performing as a solo artist, Cillian has recruited a band full of experienced session musicians to accompany him on his first professional release featuring contemporary American violin virtuoso and composer Jeremy Kittel, whose previous collaborations include Bela Fleck, Edgar Meyer, Chris Thile and My Morning Jacket.

Mixed by Michigan native Tyler Duncan and co-produced by up and coming Irish producer Lisa Canny, the sky is the limit for Cillian and 2014 promises to see him become one of the most promising young acts on the Irish music scene today.
