October Fires Share Debut EP for Halloween

October Fires entered into the new found home of Orphan Recording Studio this summer, in the beautiful surroundings of Hell Fire Studios, overlooking the flickering Dublin City skyline, to record the band’s debut EP entitled ‘Everybody Knows’. This record is a snapshot of the different tones and moods of the band, from the ominous opening track ‘Screaming Red’ to the mellower, intimate ‘Creeping In’, from the tongue-in-cheek grooves of  ‘Digging Holes’ to the more tribal, ritualistic Pray II. Recorded, mixed and produced by Gavin Glass, this debut EP is ripe for release this Halloween.

October Fires are a four-piece group consisting of Carol Somers on piano, vocals and percussion, Lisa Baker on piano, vocals and percussion, Eoghan O’Neill on bass and Eric Somers on guitar.

The band’s name was inspired by the smoky scent in the air walking home from practice one autumn night. October has a unique vibe, with its perfect blend of beauty and eerieness, a trademark of the band’s sound and their music is continually inspired by this balance.

Carol and Lisa met in 2002 studying music in Maynooth University. They’ve been inseparable ever since after finding an innate ability to harmonise together, even being able to predict what the other is about to do! This bond has become the central feature of the band.

Their style is difficult to pin down but the band describe their music as haunting, harmonic, dark pop. They take influences from choral music, classical, pop, soul, funk, folk, rock and fuse them together to create ‘their’ sound.

Greenshine Unveil Latest Single ‘The Good Is Gone’

The dust settles on a summer that was wonderful in every way for Greenshine and as long nights draw in they can dream by the fire of concerts and festivals they played, friends they made and roadtrips far and wide beneath the glorious Irish sun of 2018. The band hopes to emulate the success of previous singles ‘The Girl In The Lavender Dress’ (most played track on RTÉ Radio 1 for over a month and third most played Irish track for the year of its release 2016. ) and ‘Dandelion Seed’ (over a month at the No.1 spot on RTÉ Radio 1’s Airplay Chart and over a month on the RTÉ Radio 1 Recommends List) with their brand new single ‘The Good Is Gone’.

This song, co-written by Mary and Ellie, wraps the slow seeping away of love in a retro pop tune with an almost country flavour reminiscent of the sound of The Byrds and other sixties heroes. Like ‘Dandelion Seed’  before it, ‘The Good Is Gone’ is taken from Greenshine’s upcoming new collection due for release in early Spring 2019. As Greenshine’s singles and album tracks continue to feature on playlists both national and international, the band would be delighted to receive that same support for ‘The Good Is Gone’- a song of heartbreak with a beat. As we leap forward musically into the coming seasons, Greenshine look forward to breaking new concert and festival ground with The Ballyshannon Folk Festival and The Doolin Folk Festival already on offer in 2019 as well as old favourites like Waterford Spraoi Fest and The Cork Folk Fest. In the meantime here are some dates for your diary with more to be confirmed!

Pillow Queens Release ‘Gay Girls’

‘Gay Girls’ is the latest single from Dublin indie quartet Pillow Queens. It was recorded over two days in Attica Studios in Co. Donegal by Mercury Prize nominated and Choice Music prize winning producer Tommy McLaughlin (Villagers, Soak). Thematically the song touches on feelings of intoxicating lust coupled with relentless repression. These themes are realised through the lyrics and the music which convey an upbeat appreciation of both the negative and positive attributes of both. The theme of religion within ‘Gay Girls’ is also accented nicely by a rapturous choral outro of the song.

Pillow Queens will play dates around the country over the coming weeks, including Galway, Belfast and Limerick along with their biggest headline show to date in Whelans on November 24th.

This is the follow up to their debut EP ‘State of the State’ which came out in March.

Tour dates:

Nov 8th – Roisin Dubh, Galway
Nov 10th – Black Box, Belfast
Nov 24th – Whelans, Dublin

Warriors of the Dystotheque Release ‘I Know You’ll Never Die’

Reckless Records is delighted to release this pack from Warriors of the Dystotheque are a truly modern band, existing individually across the globe but only meeting digitally to create music with a distinctly old school feel.

A deep down and grooving monster in the best possible way, Warriors of the Dystotheque’s ‘I Know You’ll Never Die’ has been picking up support as diverse as Nemone on BBC Radio 6 to Jamie Jones.

The original is an eerie but persistent call to arms managing to give both give you tingles and move your feet. Vocalist Adam Leonard says “A Victorian séance brings forth vision of dangerous waters in this meditation on Purgatory. Some souls can never die.

The Sascha Dive mix takes it darker and psychedelic via a 6am dancefloor.

Le Galaxie’s William Fakenamé gives the whole track as rework and reshines the oldschool feel which B-side International Earth Station is worthy flip side with a roll call of astronauts both familiar and not who commute to 250 miles above the earth!

Van Morrison Shares New Track

Van Morrison releases a new track – ‘Got To Go Where The Love Is’ – on all digital platforms today (25th October 2018).

Recorded with incredible multi-instrumentalist Joey DeFrancesco and a band including Dan Wilson on guitar, Michael Ode on drums and Troy Roberts on tenor saxophone, ‘Got To Go Where The Love Is’ is a gloriously upbeat new Van Morrison composition that’s further evidence of the singer’s seemingly limitless supply of creativity. Van’s soulful words are accompanied by a fantastically evocative lyric video (created by Beautiful Digital) – click here to watch.

‘Got To Go Where The Love Is’ is taken from ‘The Prophet Speaks’, Van Morrison’s 40th studio album (released 7th December on Caroline International). The fourteen track album follows a recent run of hugely acclaimed albums (‘Roll With The Punches’, ‘Versatile’ and ‘You’re Driving Me Crazy’), each of which has delved deep into the musical styles that have continued to inspire Van throughout his life – blues, vocal jazz and R&B. Across the record, Van takes on a series of unarguable classics by the likes of John Lee Hooker, Sam Cooke and Solomon Burke (among others) and makes them unmistakably his own. Alongside these reinterpretations, ‘The Prophet Speaks’ features six phenomenal new Van Morrison compositions (including ‘Got To Go Where The Love Is’ and the album’s previously released title track).

Van Morrison plays Dublin’s 3 arena this weekend as part of the Bluesfest (with Robert Plant and the Sensational Shape Shifters).
