IMRO – The Business of Music Seminar Series Meet The Music Producers with Philip Magee, Rocky O’Reilly & Cian Boylan

With all the changes over the past 15 years in technology, recording techniques, social media and shorter attention spans from listeners, how has producing songs changed and continued to change, and how can an artist differentiate themselves when everyone has access to the same tools in a connected mash-up world?

Cian Boylan has over twenty years’ experience as a professional session pianist and keyboardist. He has performed and recorded with many leading Irish and International pop and rock artists, including: Duke Special, Camille O’Sullivan, Gregory Porter, Van Morrison, Sinead O Connor, Jerry Fish, Juliet Turner, Imelda May, Declan O’Rourke, Cathy Davey, Mary Coughlan, Ella Henderson, Aslan, Paddy Casey, Una Healy and Sam Palladio, Ciaran Lavery, Roisin O, Bressie, May Kay, Vyvienne Long, RTE Concert Orchestra, Ulster Orchestra, Riccardo Cocciante, Westlife, Robin Gibb, Sister Sledge, and LeAnn Rimes.

Recent Film and TV composing and arranging work include Golden Bear nominee “Return To Montauk” starring Stellan Skarsgard and Nina Hoss by Oscar Winning director Volker Schondorf, Oscar Nominated “The Lobster” featuring Colin Farrell, Rachel Weitz, and John C. Reilly, Bafta Award-winning of Amazon Prime/BBC TV Series “Ripper Street” (Seasons 2 to 5) starring Matthew MacFayden, and Discover Channel’s “Harley & The Davidsons” starring Michael Huisman and Dougray Scott.

He has performed in many prestigious venues and concert halls around the world, including Europe, USA, Russia, China, Japan, South America and the Middle East.

He is also a critically acclaimed jazz pianist and has recorded three albums under his own name, ‘”Soulful Days”, “Something We All Know”, and “Making Other Arrangements”. He is the band leader and vocalist in his eight-piece New Orleans funk outfit “Toot Sweet and The Shadow Man” described by Jazzwise Magazine as “The Perfect Festival Band”. He is also the musical director and arranger for “Velvet Lounge” band featuring jazz vocalist Cormac Kenevey.

Cian set up Camden Recording Studios with songwriter/performer “Bressie” and producer and guitar-hero Conor Brady to provide a unique creative hub for musicians, songwriters and producers. Located within walking distance of Dublin’s favourite bars, cafés, music venues and surrounded by International label headquarters, Camden Studios is a historic recording studio at the heart of Ireland’s music and social scene.

The studio has a rich musical history and has played host to a multitude of Irish and international recording stars including Fifty Cent, New Order, Snoop Dogg, Brian Adams, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Leon Bridges, The Thrills, Ronnie Drew, Christie Moore, Declan O’ Rourke, Hothouse Flowers, Kodaline, James Vincent McMorrow, Hudson Taylor, Shane MacGowan, Jerry Fish, Bronagh Gallagher, amongst many others.

Philip Magee has been working professionally in the music industry for over 10 years as a recording engineer and music producer. Starting his career in Chili Studios Dublin, where he began as house engineer, recording with a wide spectrum of artists; Sisqo, Samantha Mumba, Delta Goodrem, Declan O’Rourke, Brian McFadden to name a few. From there Philip went on to become a freelance producer/engineer working with the likes of The Script, Kodaline (Then 21 Demands) & Aslan  who were some of his first acts. Philip has engineered for many great producers such as Ger McDonnell (U2, Texas, Manic Street Preachers), Steve Harris (U2, Dave Mathews Band, Santana), Jerry Boys (Buena Vista Social Club), Joe Jewell (Aslan, Red Empire) & Ian Broudie (The Lightning Seeds, Arctic Monkeys)

In recent years Philip has worked on some very exciting projects including engineering and producing tracks on Kodaline’s two albums. Philip has also worked with The Script since their first album. Irish rock legends Aslan have also enlisted Philip’s services, Philip recorded Aslan’s last four albums and recently Philip engineered Miles Kane’s new album with Miles’ A list Mod super-band.

Rocky O’Reilly is a producer and mixer living in Belfast, N.Ireland.  He has worked with artists including And So I Watch You From Afar, Wheatus, General Fiasco, In Case Of Fire, Antlered Man, Cut Ribbons, Math The Band, Adam WarRock, Wonder Villains, Slomatics.

He runs Start Together Studio in Belfast, a musician-focused, multi-studio set up offering artists a comfortable, creative space with a large collection of instruments and equipment.

Together with musician Shaun Robinson he formed influential indie-pop band Oppenheimer. Robinson and O’Reilly were previously members of the now disbanded Belfast group, Torgas Valley Reds. They met in 2003, in Belfast. O’Reilly had been mixing sound and recording Torgas Valley Reds, whom Robinson drummed for. Inspired by their mutual love for Moog synthesizers, vocoders, and airhorns, O’Reilly and Robinson formed Oppenheimer in late 2004, using O’Reilly’s spare room to record 3 songs, which they sent to their favourite labels. The band when on to release 3 albums on New Jersey’s Bar/None Records.

Oppenheimer’s music has been used in various North American television shows, including How I Met Your Mother, in the episode “Lucky Penny”, Ugly Betty, and Gossip Girl.

​He travels regularly across the UK & Europe to rehearse, record or mix with artists.  He also works with Raygun Music, an artist & producer management company based in Brighton, UK
